Jail time and a conviction. A lot of these privileged middle class college kids do these sorts of things because they know there will be no know consequences

Oh, also worth noting that the painting was of course in a glass case, so it is not in any way damaged from this.

It is still the case that climate problems keep falling off the radar, though. What these women did obviously isn't going to bring the world to its knees or whatever, but it might inspire other young people to consider whether or not it could worth putting their future record of civil fines on the line for a chance to avert the apocalypse. Overwhelming numbers are ultimately the thing that pushes a government into action. The US is supposed to be the leader in the world for generating those numbers, but we have not filled those shoes in a while. However, the mechanisms for doing so are still in place and stunts like this can certianly be considered one of them - hence why it is punishable by some fine instead of prison. A fine basically just means legal for a price. This means behavior like this, if it should successfully draw people's attention to an important topic, required someone who could pay that price to do so. That's all part of the same system of democracy.

And young people are going to inherit the world anyway. It seems selfish and stupid to force them to pry it from our cold dead hands. An arranged and perpetual handoff seems wise, but i suppose that's just my opinion. Will they write in their history books that a Van Gough painting was sacrificed to save the world? Unlikely. But none of us will be alive to see what they are saying in 60 years or so, so 🤷

In this day and age, there is no good reason to have expensive artworks out in unprotected display like that.
