Why are people rude to people with Learning Disabilities?

When I’m out and about I find people generally rude to them. For example laughing and staring at them. Would you be rude to them?

They aren't.

They are usually insecure or just unsure of what to do, and make a fool of themselves as a result.

We used to get it all the time with new hires, when dealing with disabled claimants, back when I was working in government.

Had to take them aside and remind them that they are not there to catch them out as not having a disability. They are civil servants, not a fucking doctor or nurse. Their job is only to process what the doctor or nurses have told them is wrong with the claimant.

I think it is fear. Not fear OF them, but much like many homophobes it's a fear of BEING them.

We all feel a little everything sometime. Nobody always feels intelligent, nobody never had a gay thought, and the realization that some things are simply innate and completely out of our control, and that's one of them, scares people.

Of course too, with the mentally handicapped there's the additional aspect of "if I had below average IQ, would I know it? Sure, there's people with lower IQs, but I definitely know people who are a lot brighter than me too... Am I?"

Thats my theory at least.

I'm neurodivergent, so I am NOT rude to others with different minds. I try to understand them as best I can.

I am aware that neurodivergents do NOT process stimuli the same way as "normal" people, and some of them can be quite amazing and brilliant! For example, imagine being able to see sound or hear numbers!
