Trump has been issued with a subpoena to testify at the inquiry into last year's riot at the US Capitol. The committee overseeing the probe into the deadly attack in Washington DC has asked the former president for testimony and records, saying he "orchestrated" a plot to overturn the 2020 election.
"We recognise that a subpoena to a former president is a significant and historic action," chairman Bennie Thompson and vice chair Liz Cheney wrote in the letter to Trump. "We do not take this action lightly," they added.
Lawmakers say the former president was the "central cause" of a coordinated, multi-part effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The nine member panel has issued a letter to Trump's lawyers, demanding his testimony under oath by 14 November.
The letter also requested a series of corresponding documents, including personal communications between the former president and members of Congress as well as extremist groups.
It is unclear how Trump and his legal team will respond to the subpoena. It comes as Steve Bannon (a former White House advisor) was sentenced to four months in prison for failing to appear before the committee.
He had been convicted of defying a subpoena and also handed a $6,500 fine. Trump 'at the centre of a bloody attack' on the Capitol. The letter doesn't shy away from placing allegations directly at the feet of Trump. Chairman Thompson and Vice Chair Cheney wrote the committee has assembled "overwhelming evidence" that Trump "personally orchestrated and oversaw a multi-part effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election and to obstruct the peaceful transition of power".

The committee has uncovered evidence that Trump and his people were planning in October to claim a win on election day before all the votes were counted.
He approved of over 60 lawsuits which were all found to be baseless, but at least they were, afaik, legal. (I believe multiple lawyers have been struck off because they brought them against their code of ethics, but I could be wrong.)
After that, the pressure on state officials, the fraudulent and forged "alternate electors" scheme, pressuring Pence to not do his job, having his allies in congress baselessly object to election results, and finally the violent armed attack on the Capitol were all illegal, and all were down to, or even by, him.
None of those things would have happened had Trump conceded defeat and committed to a peaceful transition of power.
By rights, all of the Republicans who objected to the states' results without any evidence should be in as deep trouble as Trump should be. Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene was essentially objecting to the election that she won!
And, by the way @Surely, the blood shed that killed someone immediately, as opposed to the scores of officers who were harmed, was the woman veteran that was shot by a capital policeman for climbing through a broken window over a barricade into a room of VIPs the officer was charged with protecting, at the head of a mob in a building that none of them should have been in, with a massive insurrection inside and out, wearing a rucksack on a day when explosive devices had already been found.
Bit late for that, in my opinion. I mean, we all knew he was guilty from the start. We all knew he was lying. I suppose they had to prove that he knew he was lying before questioning him. But the clock has run out. Republicans are perhaps 75% likely to take the house and the very first thing they will do is make sure Trump escapes accountability.
Stats are hard to compute but no. The far right fake news is driving a lot of trolls to the polls but there is a chance the roe decision could drive enough normal people, too. Granted it is not much of a chance, given all the republican gerrymandering..
It's been so difficult for me to follow what happens with this man. Until there's a conviction, my tendency is to just ignore what happens with him, especially as a Canadian since I can't influence anything.
I sincerely hope that if this procedure survives to the next administration when Republicans retake the house and senate, that they will follow the recommendations of those investigating Trump, no matter what they may be. But as we know, Trump's base has been very effective at scaring Republican lawmakers into obedience.
Trump will never testify. His legal team will draw it out until the committee either no longer exists or is no longer interested. And even if he answers the subpoena, he will undoubtedly claim executive privilege on any question the committee might ask.
The subpoena is pure politics... just to make a point. The committee knows that it will never result in anything.
The whole kangaroo court clown show is a political stunt by people who already are or at least suspect they will be unemployed shortly. That is until they get board positions or tv jobs…
So the first question I have is where are the subpoenas for the hundreds of scandals Bill Clinton was involved in. My second question is where are the subpoenas for the scandals Obama was involved in? When anyone can answer those questions for me, then we can have this conversation.

He will challenger it. He was POTUS on January 6, 2021, so his lawyers will claim privilege and separation of powers issues. He might not win, but with appeals it will be tied up long enough for the GOP to take over the House if they win in a few weeks, which seems very likely. If so, they will dissolve the committee, which will void the subpoena.
I feel like its gonna happen sometime after the midterms but before new years. Making a prediction here. I just feel like Merrick Garland is very close to pulling the trigger here
