Why can’t Americans be more adaptable?

I had to learn some new skills during the pandemic to keep making money. Can they only drive?

Same as but it isn't always that simple when large industries are decimated by job loses. Its like when the housing bubble burst back in 2005 you had all these out of work construction workers, realtors, architects, engineers, builders merchants and others who work in careers involved in construction who either lost their jobs, were made part time or were struggling with less work and these people had to either tough it out or find a new job. So these guys had to find new work but with so many newly unemployed people coming from the same sector there was serious competition for any jobs going even minimum wage jobs like subway, bar work, McDonald's, driving lorries and so on and just not enough jobs to go around. I know architects that had to get jobs working in coffee shops. It's the same with oil riggers or lumberjacks when there are fewer jobs. Actually the same with almost any career were there are major job losses.

Also during the pandemic a lot of people went into trucker jobs after being let go from their jobs as there was a demand for truckers so American workers are adaptable.

Driving lorries is a highly skilled job, its not just driving at least in the heavy haulage sector.

If there are fewer trucker jobs there are currently a shortage of welders and you might earn somewhere between $50 -90,000 per year as a welder. There's a real shortage of construction workers and plumbers as well. Airport workers too. A real shortage of factory workers which is killing American manufacturer.

As far as I know there is a shortage of 80,000 truck drivers but from what I hear the hours are long and pay is low. A problem now is that truckers are aging and are starting to retire so there is no real incentive for younger men and women to become truckers though many did during the pandemic. If I was a trucker I'd go work in the Australia, Europe and the UK which are crying out for Truck drivers and apperently paying them well.

In short American workers are very adaptable and always have been. Willing to learn new trades and travel to other states for work. The only thing is that employers seem unwilling to pay workers even when a sector has shortages of people willing to do those jobs as is the case in the American trucking sector.

They do, I think the problem is once someone has done something for so long (and they're older) then it's harder for them to learn new skills. Of course, it can be done. Some people just don't want to apply themselves.

The good thing now is I think it's easier if you apply yourself. There are so many resources and information to learn online. You just need to make sure it's credible and condense it down so no time is wasted.

Where is the link to this article? It's hard for me to believe that truckers can't find work with so many retiring. Trucking Companies are having a Hard Time finding Younger People to replace the Older People who are retiring.

Not trying to beat up on truckers. I just find it strange how attached Americans are to their dying industries. Like coal miners. How much time and money did Trump spend to save five jobs?

Dying industries is a very broad term. Technically every job is vulnerable due to the next wave of automation. Trucking isn't a dying industry yet, they were saying we were short 80,000 drivers at the start of the year, they don't seemed to have changed that.
As for coal mining the problem is that whole towns and communities are built around them for generations, everyone depends on them so when they go the town is devastated and the young have to leave, families have to uproot and usually can't because they have a mortgage on a house they can't even sell because nobody wants it and it's worthless. The same thing can happen in any industry or career at any time.
What would you call dying industry? American manufacturers like car manufacturers?
People aren't attached to dying industries, its just that with mass sudden unemployment from a certain means there's more competing for other jobs.
