Why do people who dont know expect us to care about their lives?

a woman who came into retail my job months ago was checking out she said this stuff is expensive
she counts out the money saying her husband died money is tight she gives me the money is like all i have left is $6 dollars to eat.

i'm on the register putting the money in to finished the sale i can hear her just enough she said something like you dont care meaning me i did not say anything i just gave her the receipt.

why would she expect me to care. like why try to get fake sympathy i dont care
