Why is a woman referred to as a "female" but nobody refers to a man as a "male"?

I hear "male" often. I think it sounds silly (I'd rather we use "man"/"woman" instead of "female"/"male" which sounds like it's talking about biological sex) but not something that I make a fuss about.

About the only time I hear male is when it follows words like Alpha, Beta, etc.. I never hear women talk, "Why do males do this?" but I'm always hearing guys use 'female" that way.
