There's probably wheelbarrows worth of reasons, really. But I'll pick three.
First is when they don't want the truth shared. They cheated. They stole. They screwed up.
Second is when they want to be accepted. They want to be part of the group. They want to be loved. So, they lie to be like everyone else.
Third, they're afraid. So they lie to attempt (key word) to hold off whatever it is they're afraid of.

  They most usually also haven't told the truth to themselves, therefore there's no way they'll be able to tell it to others (even their sweet half, for instance).
