Nothing that steep. But I think it is generally understood that some values and ideas are better than others in academia. Most of the time more than one grade is justified. And so in these cases, having the "correct" view can often be the difference.

You can always oppose them, and I have done so for the fun of it many times, but you should make sure your reasoning is airtight and considers multiple views.

Schools as institutions are after all meant to model the future citizens. While not intentional by the teachers it is still an inherent design. And so being radically communist in the U. S probably won't land you an A unless the paper is undeniably worth it. Of course some opinions are also, when examined, wrong.

We could write whatever paper we wanted, we just had to make a valid argument from credible sources and defend it. Me and a friend had a class together once and picked opposite thesises. She got an A I got a B but that was because I suck at writing papers. I would have gotten C or lower if we hadn't done peer review together and she caught most of the big issues like I forgot to use MLA lol. I picked the liberal position

Yeah, but the opposite. For the written part of my GRE I wrote a left leaning opinion and basically received no credit for it. This was before I was particularly in politics so it can't have been too far off the rails. Fortunately I was going for engineering so math scores were all that mattered.
