To Democrats who want to abolish the filibuster, what happens if Republicans ever take control of both chambers of congress plus the white house?

It's a very real possibility that Republicans in the near future could take control of both chambers of congress plus the white house, and without the filibuster, they'd be able to push through bills unopposed with a simple majority vote.

They don't have the votes to do it. Sinema and Manchin are for sure "No" votes and there are probably others who have not been vocal but who do not like the idea.

If, however, if did happen they would do it when they control the House as well so that they could admit Puerto Rico and DC (or most of it) as states and then naturalize every illegal in the country so that they could vote in the next election, while adding a half dozen seats to the Supreme Court so they could get more anti-constitutionalists on it.

I thought we did that already? Oh with judges appointments. That didn’t really work out well for us.


But the filibuster should be kept, just enforced. Politicians should be forced to fckin stand up there for days. Not just yell “Philly” and go to dinner.

It’s a bad idea. The Senate has different rules from the House for a reason. It was supposed to be a more deliberative body and it forces some measure of bipartisanship. Now I do think they should be required to stand up there and talk the entire time, rather than declaring it and going home. That way, you’re only going to use it when it’s really important and not just to impede the majority for partisan reasons.

Then people should do them the favor of reminding them they themself removed the filibuster. They can live happily knowing they themself are to blame for no longer being able to use the filibuster.

The Republicans were already doing that since the Democrats were not using the filibuster so I fail to see your threat. I also think the filibuster is stupid on principle.

I don't care, the filibuster needs to end so congress can actually get work done.

They'd pass atrocious bills and never win an election again unless those laws enabled cheating in elections and were supported by SCOTUS.

I don't know why they don't insist on a "talking filibuster", actually make people work for it, not just say "filibuster" (or whatever) and scupper popular bills.

What would happen is then all of a sudden no filibuster would be a "threat to our democracy".

Democrats made heavy use of the filibuster during Trumps presidency, now they want to get rid of it now that Republicans are making use of it. Wouldn't surprise me if Democrats got rid of the filibuster, then when Republicans took control, they'd blame republicans for the filibuster being gone.
