The Halo Effect is the subconscious belief that attractive people, tall people, athletically fit people, and wealthy-looking people, have better personalities, and are more altruistic and nicer, kinder people, thus are more likeable. As in, outer beauty equals a good person.

While The Horn Effect is the opposite; the subconscious belief that unattractive people, short men, overweight/obese people, and poor-looking people, have worse personalities, and are more evil, untrustworthy, or criminal-like people, thus are more unlikeable. As in, outer ugliness equals a bad person.

Do you think there is any truth to the Halo and Horn Effect?

Yes, I believe attractive people are more moral and good, and unattractive/average people are less moral and untrustworthy.

I believe in the opposite of this; that attractive people tend to be worse human beings and unattractive/average people tend to be nicer and more caring.

No, I don't think there's a correlation between beauty and character/morality.

I'm a bit confused. I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you asking whether "pretty privilege/the halo effect" is real and attractive people have an advantage in most aspects of life? Or whether we think there's a correlation between someone's looks and character?

If it's the first, then yes there has been a lot of research on that subject that shows that individuals tend to find attractive people more intelligent, friendly, kind, morally superior and trustworthy than unattractive people. If it's the lattest though, no I don't believe there's any such connection... I've met some attractive people that were vapid, narcissism, or average/mediocre in terms of intellectual capacities, yet people assumed they were genius or super friendly. One such example is here on the site. There's a girl that tends to ask the most generic and meaningless questions revolving around herself, yet she has a large following base just because she's young and has a relatively attractive profile picture

Based on your response, you would likely say no, and that many attractive people can be seen by others as crazy, mean, or rude, and thus, would vote for option C.

I think there's a little truth in it. If you look at pictures of wanted criminals or police mug shots they tend not to be good looking. Smartly people from deprived areas always seem to have a certain look about them.
But if you look at people from affluent areas they look different, better. Obviously this has to do with better nutrition growing up.

It would be interesting to see if looks play a role in how juries see those in the dock.

When I was looking up pics for this, I came across Ted Bundy, and women considered him very good looking and he had legions of female followers from prison. They cast Zac Ephron to play him in the movie.

And when you have female pedophiles, like Debra LaFave, teachers who sleep with their underage male students, they tend to be relatively good looking.

And then you have psychopaths like Amber Heard, in this Summer's trial.


Yes, rich people tend to be taller and better looking due to nutrition and better health, like Ivanka Trump being 5'11" and beautiful.

... But does health and nutrition play a major role in one's moral character and how they treat others? Rich and poor people can be huge assholes and I've met both in a city like Philadelphia (which has a population of 99% assholes, by the way.)

I'm not saying it always holds true, there's plenty of exceptions to the rule. But on balance it seems to. When you're out and about you need a six sense about whose safe and who isn't, and I think we do use looks to get an impression of people

I absolutely believe in the effects, I've seen it played out a lot. But I don't think they are right. I don't think there's an inherent connection between beauty and character. Although I will say people on the receiving end of the halo effect have more opportunity for becoming worse, and people with the horn effect have more excuses for becoming worse.

You're either good looking or not, but attractive people are always given a pass. I worked at a country club, and the attractive waiters could get away with saying things to women, that would get an unattractive waiter fired.

I would say it is more a face value look with both Halo and Horn. I have seen the inverse for both of those beliefs a fair amount of times

I think that more attractive people are more successful in life and tend to get hired for better jobs and get promoted faster. I don't think there is a relationship between looks and morality
