Halo effect is the belief that people are more likely to associate good qualities about a person if that person is attractive/goodlooking while at the same time, associating bad qualities about a person if they're unattractive/ugly

actually not really but the reverse is very true (it's called the devil effect for that by the way, not the halo effect). the halo effect (good looking bias) idea comes from one group of researchers who compared hot people to ugly people and found that in every single aspect attractive people where rated more favorably than ugly people. the researchers concluded that its seems that attractive people are rated better because of positive bias to hot people. but what they didn't test was if good looking people would be perceived better than average looking people too, not just ugly people. so they redid the whole experiment a couple later, where instead of ugly people they used average looking people. they got totally different results, where basically except for very attractive people there was no difference in perception of traits (like intelligence or kindness for exemple) between them. hot people where only perceived better than average looking people for social stuff (like being more sociable, having a higher social status, etc). they also redid the experiment where they compared average and ugly people, and found that the same gap the initially saw between pretty and ugly, was the same here. so they concluded that it seems there isn't much of a halo effect, but there is definitely the reverse (devil effect)

when i'm saying the halo effect isn't exactly accurate by the way i'm not saying pretty priviledge doesn't exist, cos it does. the halo effect doesn't refer to preferential treatment but just seeing their personality in a better light than it really is. it's scientifically proven that good looking people (from the moment your oh so slightly good looking, not just very good looking people like the halo effect), you are treated better by virtually everyone. and the better you look the stronger the good treatment gets. part of that is because hot people are perceived as having a high social status (not talking about money here but that is also true though too) and people with a high social status are treated better cause biology. good looking people basically are seen in other words as more valuable than others. also cause sexual attraction and stuff. people treat people that look good of the opposite sex much better than good looking people of the same gender (and obv better than less attractive people of the opposite gender) for that reason, wether they realize it or not
