School Uniforms - Good or Bad?

What are your thoughts on schools implementing uniforms? Where I'm from, pretty much every school (both primary and secondary) have them.

I can see the argument for why they shouldn't be allowed, though honestly I fall on the side of keeping them.

I'm in the United States and although some places use uniforms, many do not, especially compared to the UK and Ireland.

I am for the uniforms. My reason is two-fold: first, it costs so much LESS to put my kids in uniforms than it does to buy all the other clothes. Second, it evens the playing field. Kids aren't feeling bummed because their friend has $500 shoes and theirs come from the thrift store. Or the fighting over brands and other stuff. Just uggggg.

My opinion isn't always popular; I know there are many parents who don't want uniforms. I respect that. I still think they're good.

I grew up with this exact reason in my mind. Even though I had option for private schools with color days in my City my parents enrolled me in a Public School. And to this day I think it was a good decision. I have never let a private school kid make me feel any less. My English is liked by foreigners too ).
And I got medals even though they are paper weights for now but still it's better than I being a spoiled kid

I'm pretty sure it puts an end to the fashion wars and some gang-related issues. I would prefer it for my kids. Nothing irritated me more than my oldest blowing $900 on shoes, and none of them last as long as the $99 hiking shoes I get maybe once every couple of years and wear every day. Thank the Gods my youngest is autistic and is just happy they have velcro instead of shoestrings. That fashion bullshit was some serious bullshit. I was more popular than him in High School and I was dirt poor.

I'd love to see all of that cancer just cut out of the system.

It's actually the opposite effect. Imagine you're a parent and you're told your student has to spend $150 on some BS school uniform just so a few companies and your corrupt city mayor can get kickbacks from the parents. Would you rather just have to wear the same hand-me-down clothes two days in a row in school, or the same $150 uniform five days in a row in school? Uniforms also don't end bullying either, as they tried to make us wear uniforms when I was in public high school, and many of us just couldn't afford them.

@MCheetah This is true. When I was in Japan I had a thing for Japanese schoolgirls... so I looked into getting the outfit for my girlfriend and I was blown away at how expensive they were. My wife and I were both military, and they jack up the prices of the uniforms as well. They bottleneck who gets to make the outfits and then jack up the price. Being held captive to having to wear those outfits, it's like no choice but to pay.

I watch Korean and Japanese Dramas and the students wear school uniforms. Korean and Japanese students are better educated than American students so wearing school uniforms is not bad. Their school uniforms look nice. For example, this is a photo from the Korean drama "School 2017."

I personally have liked the idea of school uniforms. School dress codes were always so strict, and it was hard to sometimes find clothes to wear once different fashions came around. I would've liked it when I was in school if we had uniforms.

I am in favor, but i’m not convicted to that opinion. I have heard and read arguments for and against. I never had to wear a skool uniform though, so i’m lacking half of the experience to be necessarily knowledgeable enough to be convicted. I also do not have kids. So i have no investment in the debate beyond the academic.

I'm in favor of it. I grew up poor and being picked on/getting into fights about my shitty clothes was just a needless distraction from my studies. Also you don't want too much skin distracting everyone, particularly when everyone is new to such temptations.

I'd say just make sure that the uniforms aren't polyester trash and you're good.

I think they give you that unique look and the feeling that "We are one" when you see everybody in your school dressed up in the same uniform. Although of course sometimes you may hate the school days and the people in the school.

However I think a uniform can be a useful way to prevent indifference. Imagine a rich kid wearing designer and a poor kid wearing the same clothes he/she wore last year.

Yeah, I think it's better than just coming in whatever clothes you want. It stops kids potentially being picked on for being poor and having less expensive clothes, and a lot of them do look pretty good in my opinion (though I have definitely seen some that are 😨)

I'm really not fond of uniforms. But as I've gotten older and I started having children of my own. I think uniforms are the best. All the children are dressed similar nobody's segregated because they're either too poor or too rich. All the young ladies wear a nice skirt and blouse or pants and a nice blouse. All the young men were either an open button down colored shirt with blazer with nice pants. or button down dress shirt with tie and Blazer and nice pants.

Because public schools have bigger issues to worry about and school uniforms are expensive and usually a monopoly and scam, as was the case back when I was in high school in 2004 and my city, Philadelphia, issued a public school uniform mandate. It was just a corrupt deal between clothing company contractors and the absolute piece-of-sh*t mayor at the time, John Street. They paid him millions of dollars, and he forced every public school student to buy $80-120 school uniforms, just to line his own pockets. I refused to wear one though, because I grew up poor and it was super-corrupt how they were trying to force uniforms onto people. This was Fall of senior year though, so after enough detentions and too many kids protesting, the school just stopped punishing those who didn't wear the uniforms, and I had left high school by then to know if they still kept the policy throughout the years or not.

After looking online, it's STILL a f*cking disaster, and all the good schools (the ones with rich enough students who ironically, could afford uniforms, unlike the poor students who can't) have dropped the policy and don't enforce it, while all the poor schools are still getting kickbacks from the clothing companies. It's sheer corruption. And I say this as an actual teacher right now (not in America, thank god.)

I could go on to say how "if they're going to force school uniforms on students, then they damn sure better make them affordable too," but to be honest, if I was a parent in 2023 right now, there's no f*cking way in hell I'd have my kids in an American public school, anyway. Home schooled, tutoring, or hell, even Khan Academy and Zoom classes at home, but the American school system is nothing but a brainwashing program, to begin with. There's a REASON why I don't teach in the US.

When you are a kid you hate them but I suppose it keeps kids from wearing stuff they shouldn't or having to compete with each other.

I still have my school uniform, dress up in it for my husband sometimes so there is that.

My school made us wear uniforms from 6th to 8th grade and I didn't really like it because it was plain white polo shirt and black bottoms and they let us change it a little bit once October came by letting us wear black on top and khaki on the bottom but to me when everyone was wearing just black and white school looked like a black and white movie so to put it simply I don't like school uniforms because to me they take away individuality by making everybody look the same

I think they're quite good, because it reduces the amount of difference between kids with rich and poor students. There was one boy in my class who didn't have to wear a blazer because his parents couldn't afford one. We thought he was lucky!

School uniforms actually help with uniformity. Otherwise rich kids or rather glamour kids will want branded clothes and make a problem for the rest of the kids and ultimately the parents with constant fashion trends

Consistency in what students wear is good, and avoids several competitive-dress issues. Uniformswork, and so does a consistent dress code.
