The drinking age was lowered to 18 during the Vietnam era. The rationale being that if you are old enough to get killed in Vietnam you should be old enough to drink. There was a big increase in traffic fatalities among 18 year olds and younger. It was a lot easier for high school kids to get alcohol because many high school kids were 18 as well and used to buy for their friends,.
