By the exact same logic no black person can be European and neither black nor white can be American.

The difficulty of basing it on our 'roots' is the simple question of when it starts to count. Is 400 years enough? What about a thousand? At some point in time we have to look at it and say that these people are now seen as being from where they have been from since birth and for X generations before them.

I think birth is more than enough. European does not mean white and African does not mean black. If we need the words black and white we already have them. No need for pointless race politics to divide ourselves.

Yeah, I think so. I'm white and American and if someone were to tell me I'm not American but European because I'm white, I'd be offended. From an ancestral perspective, that may be true, but one's nationality doesn't always correspond with where their ancestors were from

No it may just be a lack of education. I mean hell I always thought Africans were black myself. Just the same as Hispanics from Mexico, only to realize there are some Hispanics like Canelo Alvarez who doesn’t fit my knowledge of what I think Mexicans lol like.
