If they went back willingly? That would probably be a different story. China has no real claim on Taiwan besides historical association; the claim is "we used to rule them" when it was actually the other way around. I mean, we rebelled against the king of England, but we didn't go on to try to forcibly depose him over there.

Chinese in mainland is citizens, their land includes China. they use Taiwan because province overlap country make administrative waste. So just habit to name it. I live in Shanghai I would say I am shanghainese in Chinese too.
