Basic Definition: the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.
doesn't mean that’s the only or even the right definition. Words have usages more than absolute definitions. So what is freedom to you?

More than European nations but still restricted in many aspects.
Such as in Germany they do not even have freedom of speech or freedom of expression. Someone who displays the Nazi symbol can be charged with a crime.
In the US that is allowed, but I don't live there, I never will and if the people there are okay with only thinking they have freedom of speech/expression I am not going to judge them. Let them be happy with the perception that they have it.
Freedom to do many things is great, if you do them right. For example, Black lives matters protesters have all the right to assemble and protest all they want but when they started blocking roads... they should all be shot and executed.
They are now road hazards and dangerous to any one who gets stuck in them, from having their cars vandalized to smashing windows and beating the shit out of people or pulling them out of their cars and raping them.
I fully support being allowed to ram your car down the road over protesters who should of stayed on the sidewalk for ALL protests regardless of what the issue is.
So sure, we have freedom to do many things but you need to do them the right way, not blocking traffic as that is the wrong way to do it and those people need to be removed from society so they'll never do it again.
We also should be allowed to own the same kind of weapons that the US military has, including assault weapons which we cannot currently buy new ones as new full automatic weapons are outlawed.
Freedom is also having our privacy protected, legally and always. Something that often doesn't happen. As such we are not free... rural American's are more free than city people though by far.
City people get told what color they have to paint their house and how their yard has to look, where rural people believe in property rights.
@TrueConfection hell nah you won't catch me being controlled
@Aerissa_Jade what kinda bs fascism everyone do what I say stuff like that exist this is why I won't live anywhere like that or HOA lol hell naah
"Such as in Germany they do not even have freedom of speech or freedom of expression. Someone who displays the Nazi symbol can be charged with a crime."
Yes, and there's a very good reason for that. I't pretty much the only retriction on speech, though.
Universal health care, in most (if not all) European countries, gives people the freedom to leave a bad job without the danger of being made bankrupt by an unexpected illness. That's quite an important freedom that isn't available in the US. Breaking Bad would never have been made in Euurope.
@goaded People have the freedom in the US to pay for their own healthcare, to buy it if they so choose. It is a product like everything else and you can use cobra to pay for your own premiums when you leave a bad job to keep health insurance.
Having freedom to pay for and buy your own stuff true freedom, getting something for free on the backs of others is not freedom, that makes someone a loser who wants to steal someone else's hard earned cash.
@goaded You are free to convince someone to be your doctor free of charge, healthcare is not a human right, it never has been. You can go to any doctor and ask them to treat you for no money and see if they will.
Your free to do that, as much and as many times as you want.
Most doctors want something in return for their services, don't you want something in return for any services you provide too? or are you willing to work free with no money or anything?
@Aerissa_Jade Seems like your og definition of freedom contradicts in parts. Mine too, tho.
Not really that hard of a concept, people are "free" to buy what they want, they just need to pay for it or offer something of value if needed.
Anti freedom is saying you cannot buy health insurance, regardless of how much money you have.
Nothing that costs money is a human right, no one has the right to live on someone else's dime... and this includes anything paid for by tax money.
Believe me, I'm all for free healthcare if tax money is NOT USED to fund it.
I know freedom is not what most people in the USA have. There is almost nothing a person can do that doesn't require a license, permission, or that is not taxed against our wishes.
Most people are not free. Most are slaves.
They have little or no self control and are slaves to their passions.
Drinking
Smoking
Drugs
The easy way out of things
Lying
Gossip
Putting others down
Reckless, unhealthy sex with people we don't even know
The approval of others
Food... etc.
Very, very few people have enough self control to live a free and healthy life to where their hearts and motives are pure. Very few people are stable, have self control, can make 100% wise and healthy choices... makes are slaves to their weaknesses.
Only outlaws have freedom, but it's a horrible and animalistic existence, running from the law.
All else live under laws and societal norms. Hence one really has true freedom. Only certain degrees of it.
Also, what may be "freedom" to you, may be hell to others.

We all know or at least should know that freedom is rather subjective.
Some folks don't feel they are free, because they can't restrict the freedoms of other people.
Some folks don't feel free because if they say something that offends someone else, they could face consequences.
So when you have folks coming from such irrational foundations for the definition, it doesn't bode well for getting to an agreement about what freedom actually is.
Looking at people's answers, you can see some folks aren't serious. Others give non answers. Others spout cliches.
But very few actually attempt a definition.
I think it is silly to pretend that absolute freedom is attainable.
My definition of freedom is one I state within the context of society.
So with that understood;
Freedom is being able to participate in the creation/maintenance of a government that clearly defines the rights for its citizens.
Freedom would be free to leave this life without a care, do what I wish.
I turned myself over to christ, so that isn't free, that's in chains... even if I'm not focused on it right now.
free to a large extent and doing ok, but only to an extent. noone is free
For me freedom refers more to a philosophical concept... None of us are truly free in that. We are pushed and constrained by our circumstances, experiences, social circles, financial constraints and especially our emotions and feelings which make most people a slave to act or refrain from acting.
And that's if you even have freedom of choice to begin with...
By that definition, yes I'm free, but it only applies to the act or action. I can act without hindrance or restraint, but I'm not free from the consequences. I can not act with impunity - only the most powerful or wealthy can do that, or certain politicians and ex-Presidents. :-D
Free based on your definition above , but still have my own code of ethics, so not totally free in that respect.
Restricted by typical laws. But they don't restrict me from going anywhere in Canada or doing what I want to do, unless it is considered an illegal activity.
Freedom is do what you want when you where you want to. Of course there are limits on freedom of course as along as we have a governor of any kind
For me freedom is peace and quiet. Being able to do what I want and live how I want as long as I’m not hurting anyone else, without having a bunch of self righteous busy bodies telling me how to live my life
Financial freedom = no debts.
other than that…we are pretty much restricted in everything else.
Behaviorist boyfriend Skinner wrote that freedom does not really exist. We always have a force acting on us. The Government, our bosses, parents, or gravity they all take away our freedom.
Freedom in the United States is being encroached upon. However, thankfully we are still more free than other Western nations. (Although I fear that may change soon.)
We all have limited freedoms. Even a guy in a windowless cell can choose which corner he sits in. Okay you don't have much freedom if you're chained to the wall. We're actually very lucky in that respect.
About as free as a "free range" turkey.
Freedom isn't Free
https://youtu.be/7ESMsYrckNIThe ability to do what you please so long as it does not violate the rights of others.
Didn't someone once sing that, "freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose"? In that case, not really.
Freedom is bieng able to choose one's path. This dosen't mean you don't serve but rather that you choose what to serve.
No. We might be free within certain parameters, but not without restraints of some kind.
there are limits to freedom. but then you're from a ghetto, so you assume everybody thinks as you do.
No one is truly free we all have restrictions. no matter where you live
My ex wife is ruining everything. I need to find someone to make her jealous but none wants me.
