Clearly, other countries are going to do everything possible to stop him in Ukraine. So what is he doing, killing lots of Ukrainians, and killing a lot of his own people for what? Causing in an enormous amount of damage… Even if he succeeded in taking some territory, which I don’t know if he will it’s most certainly not worth the price being paid. And he’s continuing to put more chips into a bad hand.

This gets into his motive and what he sees as the options for the country. There's differing views on that. In my view, it's largely about their security, security of ethnic Russians, NATO encroachment. Started with the changes in 2014. But others think it's about his ambition to expand to the old empire... which is also about security.

Depending how you see that, then it tells you what he thinks his options are and how far he will go.

I think he think's he is saving and protecting his country from the West, since they are not cooperative and are not friendly to Russia. you can lookup the history with Scott Ritter for one source to get the "Russia" view.

Bottom line... I don't think he's going to stop and trust with the west is broken. He's reached out for long time to no avail. I see no good end without horrible losses. In my view, the US is enticing this intentionally rather than trying to end it. Others think doing so is apeasement. I favor return to stability [not that it is now possible], some want death and war. Choose your view... Trump offered to negotiate and end... denied!

I frankly don't know what you can trust in media. Ukraine controls their media (there is no free press), so does Russia.
Let's see... they turned loose prisoners whom expect to die? Is Russia punishing those that do, like USA does when their soldiers do the same, including murdering civilians. Is Ukraine punishing those who exected prisoners. It's a war... that's the problem, standards of humanity fall apart.
I don't claim to be anywhere close to it to tell you what the truth is. I'm sure it's awful and all efforts should be made to end it by negotiation... now!

#1 Saving the ethnic Russian minorities in Eastern Ukraine, who have been subjected to, frankly speaking, ethnic cleansing (to be more specific, forced assimilation + terrorism) campaigns by the US-supported Ukrainian forces since 2014.

#2 Ukraine is de facto a NATO member and the Russians were always clear they would not accept the presence of NATO in Ukraine. NATO is actually an organization whose raison d'être is to affront Russia. Their military response was their way to say, "Enough is enough."

#3 Demoralizing the West and destroying the US-imposed "Rules Based Order," also known as "Liberal World Order," and paving the way for a multipolar world, where regional powers have the same importance as world leaders as the US.
