What do you think of the purge happening in real life?

In the movies, it seems that as a result of the single night a year of anarchy, the rest of the time crime is at an all-time low. Do you think these results would be replicable in real life? Do you think there is some value to a real purge?

In the movie, since people know they can get away with anything on that day, they just patiently wait and plan and prepare. Technically, crime is reduced because crime doesn't exist on that day. But practically speaking, there are more total acts of violence because of how much occurs on that day. So since it doesn't actually reduce damage (it has the opposite effect), it wouldn't actually be helpful for mitigating violent crime.

Another big drawback in the movie is that the wealthiest people in the world are protected and shielded during it, leaving the poor to fend for themselves. Which is exactly how it would work in the real world. Because of this, it doesn't do much to solve the underlying issue that created the purge in the first place: Crime brought on by poverty and scarcity.

So what was the result of all of this in the movies? The "forever purge." Groups of people took matters into their own hands and began to purge whenever they felt like it, emboldened by their kills in the years prior, trained for violence, and desensitized to violence. They no longer felt the need to wait for once a year or to be beholden to the rich. They started to take whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. The purge was a complete and total failure.

I think a lot of people would do a lot worse then they would like to think. If real purges were a thing the rich or better off people would be more likely to survive as they could afford better gear, better guards, better shelter. What have you. I may like the movies and am a gun owner. But id never want a real purge.

The Purge never ended. Today people are killing others like crazy, and for seemingly no reasons. Maybe these movies started all this. Some people can't tell fact from fiction.

It won't and it's a rather daft concept - though an entertaining mental experiment.

You "save" all your crime for one day a year, when it is legal and therefore not "crime".

It would be akin to not buying anything all year until the Black Friday or Christmas sales. Then buying so much that it lasts until the next one. Won't work out.
