If you were in charge of the prisons I'm your area, and shit hit the fan, what would you do with the prisoners?

As in what? Some sort of war or other outside calamity? A sudden outburst of zombie apocalypse? Or are we talking about said prisoners rebelling?

In the calamity situation? I'd probably gather everyone up. Explain the situation and then let all or most of them go. For some reason people tend to picture some sort of psych-ward criminals but most people are fairly normal people. Maybe a screw or two loose, but who doesn't have that nowadays?
So if society was irrevokably and ruthlessly changed I'd just figure they've done their time. If someone was too bad to be let out even in that situation? I guess its on me to make sure they're not. By the end of that I might be worse than the prisoners.

If its an uprising?
First, those don't really happen here. Prisoners are treated with basic human respect and that alone tends to solve it all. But outside that there are still many failsafes in place. Routines to be followed. I'd simply identify which we're at and follow it. After all, a nation-wide preparation plan that has stood the test of time should still be better than any improvised solution I'd come up with on the spot.

Assuming by shit hitting the fan you mean a group of people fought in the yard I'd add time to their sentence and take away their privileges no solitary confinement though that makes people go crazy and not in the fugitive way this said if I was in charge I'd try to rehabilitate them like Europe does

Oh in that case I'd set free the less dangerous prisoners based on their crimes and how they acted in prison this said I'd imagine theirs a protocol for a situation like this like the one that says if we go to ww3 and we need more soldiers we will put them in the army and shoot the ones that can't be trusted or something like that I'm no prison expert

It was essentially State-level gaslighting.
Agents would enter your home and move things around, spread rumors about you, even create false photos of you in compromising situations.
They'd send agents to seduce you and inform on you.
The objective was psychologicical breakdown - they wanted you to stop, but didn't mind if the victim committed suicide.

There's a point where they interview both the dissident (a man) and the two Stasi agents (man and woman) assigned to "break" him.
Interestingly enough, the male agent was a previous victim of the system, while the woman thought she was doing the right thing.

If I could change the law I would bring back executions because It would bring fear to the population and they will think twice before committing a crime, mostly the people thinking of doing the worst crimes, I would execute for rape, sexual assault, murder, pedophilia, kidnapping etc. And their execution's humane levels will be based on their crimes humane levels, the less humane their crimes, the more they will suffer during their execution, and yes the option for the suffering family members to do the execution would be there, they can even choose the execution if they want.
