The own party undermining an incumbent president seeking re-election would be extremely stupid and happened not even to Nixon. No doubt an 80 years old Biden is past his prime, but if he really wants the nomination (and nobody convinces him behind closed doors to abstain for someone younger), he will get it.

In this case, it is definitely Biden. I've been watching him for almost 50 years - I met him in 2009 - and he is definitely acting like Joe Biden always has.

The real issue with "handlers" was with George H W Bush. Presidents Bush were good men for the most part. Unfortunately, Bush 43 had 9/11 thrust on him. He was too much under the influence of the neocons. He recognized this at the end of his administration which is why he and Dick Cheney had something of a falling out; Bush had found himself and was his own man at the end. I understand why he's kept a low profile as an ex-president. Good for him. Besides, he took up painting and I think he's rather good!

It's too bad Jeb Bush likely will not run in 2024. Unfortunately, his son, George P. Bush is a sycophantic asshole in the mold of DeSantis and Cruz and is a neo-Trump in a way.

Bush 41 was his own man and a decent one. I would have considered voting for his re-election in 1992 but then:

1. His showing how out of touch he was with real people (he was puzzled by price scanners and had no idea of the price of milk).

2. By being in cahoots with big business by being against the Family Medical Leave Act
and

3. (Mis-) handling the end of the USSR and the shifting world order (*)

convinced me to vote for Bill Clinton.

If he seriously runs (inside sources say that he will), he will be the nominee unless something happens between now and then.

As unpopular as he is, they have exactly zero alternatives that are polling higher. Their best strategy at this point is to manipulate media coverage to support Trump winning the Republican nomination in a way that discourages as many Republicans as possible from participating (like a petty but vicious feud between him and Desantis), while energizing their own base on an anti-Trump campaign rather than a pro-Biden one, which is sure to lose.
