Why do you suppose that the subways in Bangkok and Singapore are pristine and crime free, but in NYC they are a death trap?

Not so sure about Bangkok, I don't remember the subways, but I've been in Singapore is very clean and shiny and crime free. But its almost a police state with very strong enforcement of laws and likely sometimes punishment of innocent people. Its also very small and quite wealthy.
Those countries are a bit more advanced than the U. S. plus they are very homogenous, while the U. S especially NY is extremely diverse with people from all over the world with different cultures and mannerisms.
