I am honestly fine with that from a strategic point of view. Trump has been like a sponge absorbing republican funding for years now and starving the rest of the party of funding which decreases their chances of winning. Furthermore, Trump is really bad at handling money and incredibly greedy so most of the money people give him is either pocketed by him for personal expenses or goes to pay for things like legal costs or debts.

While I would love Trump going broke, him being a financial liability to the worst part of American politics is a close 2nd.

He thought he could still work the system to remain president, I don't think he thought he'd really won. Here's a bit from the 5th Jan 6 hearing (I didn't spend long looking for this, so there's probably more specific testimony in the transcripts):

"A key focus of our hearing today will be a draft letter that our witnesses here today refused to sign. This letter was written by Mr. Jeff Clark with another Department of Justice lawyer, Ken Klukowski, and the letter was to be sent to the leadership of the Georgia state legislature. Other versions of the letter were intended for other states.

Neither Mr. Clark nor Mr. Klukowski had any evidence of widespread election fraud, but they were quite aware of what Mr. Trump wanted the department to do. Jeff Clark met privately with President Trump and others in the White House and agreed to assist the president without telling the senior leadership of the department who oversaw him.

As you will see, this letter claims that the US Department of Justice's investigations have "Identified significant concerns that may have impacted the outcome of the election in multiple states, including the state of Georgia." In fact, Donald Trump knew this was a lie. The Department of Justice had already informed the president of the United States repeatedly that its investigations had found no fraud sufficient to overturn the results of the 2020 election."

Firstly, Trump did "work through the process", which ended as soon as his final lawsuit was thrown out. From that point on, it became criminal.

Not really, it nearly worked.

He'd lost the Electoral College and with it the election, he knew that. The only way to remain president was via a seldom if ever used feature of the law which would result in a House vote, but with two votes per state. There are more states represented by Republicans in the House than Democratic ones, so that was a vote he could win (provided Republicans in the House would support him over their oath of office).

How do you get to that vote? By having neither candidate get 270 Electoral College votes. But Biden had far more than that, so some states' results had to be nullified, or the Jan 6 count had to be stopped.

The attempt to nullify the votes came in two parts: forged documents pretending that there were two official slates of electors from multiple states (Republican states that Biden won), and the willingness of Republican lawmakers and VP Pence to pretend that they were valid and the states' results "disputed".

Pence refused to go along with that (although he did seriously consider it, afaics), so the attack happened, and could have resulted in the count being stopped, possibly by spiriting Pence away from the Capitol altogether ("“I’m not getting in the car, Tim,” Pence replied. “I trust you, Tim, but you’re not driving the car. If I get in that vehicle, you guys are taking off. I’m not getting in the car.”").

So, that's how you attempt a coup in the United States of America.

@goaded No; he was just getting started. And that's why the states sent alternate electors to challenge the electoral college vote. To make sure that Biden was not installed before they had time to examine all of the facts.
That's what the internal "fight" was all about. Of course, we all know what happened. The entire process was derailed by external players (the protestors.). So that's why Pence and everyone else decided to go ahead and certify the election later that night. Because things had gotten out of hand and they said "fuck it. That's enough."

There have been two years now, with various states investigating their elections, and there's still no evidence of sufficient fraud to overturn the election. Arizona even found Biden won by more votes than thought in one investigation, carried on with 10,000 hours more investigation and found nothing (and the Republican AG buried the report and lied about there being questions still outstanding).

If irregularities were found, I think there should have been a re-vote in the states that had irregularities.
This re-vote should have taken place on Monday, January 11th (to give enough time to notify everyone, but also give enough time to count the votes.)

OK, but that's not what the law allows for, irregularities weren't found, and all the noise about a stolen election turned out to be an attempt to steal the election in the way I laid out earlier. Florida was decided with around 500 votes in 2000, it later turned out that Gore would have won if all districts had held to the same standard (whichever standard was chosen). Bush was still president, because that's what the law said.

You're right, it's a good article. The only recompense for a stolen election is to vote out the offender next time (if there is a next time; the first thing that dictators do when they gain power is re-write the laws in their favour so they can keep it). The last two years have shown that the election wasn't stolen, there was nothing like enough fraud to affect even one state's election result (there is always some individual fraud, and in 2020 most of it came from Republicans, including some lawmakers).
