Once a much loved children's toy they've fallen out of fashion and are seen as racist by some. Which has got me thinking, given Americas reputation for race issues are golliwogs still popular with American kids?
I have never heard the term. I've never seen one, either, aside from white versions like Raggedy Ann.
It is extremely politically incorrect to portray caricatures of people of African heritage these days, even though some blacks, themselves, portray black stereotypes.
This conjured a memory of a story my mom once told me. She said when she was young (probably around 1930), her little sister said she wanted a pickeninny. It wasn't racist. She didn't even know what that meant. She just thought that black babies were really cute.
The authoritarian nature of police and government these days makes me sick. Those golliwogs were probably cherished vintage antiques. Who knows if the owners are racist. It doesn't matter.
I oppose cleansing the world of pieces of history such as dolls, books, songs and films in the name of political correctness. History is being erased. It is going way, way too far.
And the person who reported that bar to the police is a genuine piece of shit.
Never heard of these before but your best bet is to not bring that to America anytime soon unless you don’t mind confrontation and controversy; that will bring not the best attention and I’d assume loads of it.
That golliwog puppet is very interesting though! If you haven’t heard of “blackface”, this puppet is the epitome of blackface. Definitely take the time to google it but, blackface was used ages ago (look it up) in the media to target and put shame on black people through the use political cartoons, cartoon characters depicting an unrealistic person with black (not brown) skin, noticeable big lips and big creepy eyes. If not a cartoon they would have a white guy paint his face black and he would do some extremely ignorant acts making fun of black people. It’s been many years since that and I don’t even think a lot of people even know what black face is and that’s OK we’re definitely better off not knowing what it is. Your puppet is black face in America.
The problem is apparent, Americans struggle with racism. Racism to me, simply put, is someone who severely doesn’t like a generalize group of people based on a the differences on not only how they look, but the Culture, and beliefs too. what makes this racist or not?, this isn’t racist (when it is). Free speech in America will justify that as long as it’s not threatening you’re allowed to say whatever you want to whoever you want. Me personally, I cannot be racist or at least that’s how I naturally feel. I am 2 races and it wouldn’t make sense for me view the world with prejudice. The reality is, in the country where free-speech is allowed, we cannot regulate what can be said this also allows racism but we can choose how to act upon them!
They're not popular with American kids, not that I know of anyway. At one time they were common (don't know about popular) in the deep South. By appearance, they were reminiscent of the old blackface minstrel tradition (racist today by most standards).
I've never seen one (not even in a large old Toys backwards-R Us store). The word is rarely used. I doubt too many people here even know what the word is/means. We're more familiar with the word polliwog (tadpole).

I remember Robertson's jam had a Golliwog as their mascot with the tag line "Golly it's Good" until the early 90s. You collected the tokens and got loads of cool stuff from toys to cutlery.
As a result I grew up thinking a Golliwog was a symbol of the best quality products.

As for the doll, the only one I've ever seen was in an episode of, "Danger Man". And that was about 10 or 15 years ago! I didn't even know they existed up to that point!
