Why does the left get upset when Trump acknowledges that both Putin and Jinping are very intelligent?

I just don't get it. Acknowledging their intellect does not mean he says they're nice guys. Wouldn't it be wise to acknowledge your opponent's strength? Should Trump pretend they're stupid? If the FBI was looking for a criminal mastermind, would it be more polite to go out looking for stupid people?
