Study the first democracy, ancient Athens, the men who built and manned the triemes were given a right to vote. Ultimately they had no real influence. It was just a way to manipulate them into serving in the army. plato, Aristotle, Socrates. Etc lived during the democracy and said it was the worst form of government imaginable. We have their writings. Go read them.
The us didn't even start as a democracy. Only land owners could vote for senators which would then actually vote.
