Sailing back in the days where you used cloth sails took a very long time but it was also vital for trade and travel so a fairly significant number of people A single voyage could take months to complete and it could take a very long time until they came back to their home and potentially meeting their wife and family.

As such, sailors has always been known to spend a lot of money when they pull into a port and also hook up with any women and/or prostitutes that they can get their hands on.

Ah, a part of my reply got cut out. Basically, a large amount of people worked as sailors during that time to fulfill the need of trade and travel. As such you could see it as a fairly large minority of people who lived this form of lifestyle.

It was not just prostitutes. Women living nearby knew that not only did sailors spend a lot of money since it was one of the few opportunities they had while sailing, meaning they could be treated really well on dates and such, but also that they were only there momentarily so sex comes up much quicker and usually neither of them had any expectations of meeting the other again or at least not anytime soon so women could essentially juggle several relationships at once or just see it as one night stands without any real strings attached.
