I lived in Russia for few years. If you don't pass you most likely will be brutally beaten and harassed on the streets. Many violent men, the culture is deeply homophobic and the government is catering to that using antigay agenda as a political tool. It was better in late 90's and early 2000's. There were gay clubs that advertised as gay clubs, gay scene. Not any more, everyone is in deep stealth.
