Taiwan is a massive trade partner of the US, particularly as a contributor to our own manufacturing industry, as well as tech industries, providing roughly 80% of the microchips that we import. Unlike Ukraine, Taiwan is actually a crucial location of interest for the US that can much more seriously be talked about whether going to war over it is worthwhile.

The US is also a terrible "ally" to Taiwan and has still failed to deliver multiple weapons shipments that have already been paid for. It's not too hard to figure out why though, because many of our prominent elected trashcans are in bed with China. $500 million is also a drop in the bucket compared to what we've spent funding the war in the Ukraine.

... Did you miss the part where Russia invaded Ukraine and is trying to conquer the country even as I type this? Beijing's ties to Taiwan are much older and MUCH stronger. The US also has standing defense agreements with Taiwan (unlike Ukraine), so we HAVE to defend them if they get invaded. Above and beyond that, Taiwan is a major trading partner and vital source of many kinds of electronics; we can't afford to let the rebels conquer it.

Jinping's saber-rattling there to test US resolve, and, bluntly, looking weak now could lead to a full-blown war. Would you prefer spending half a billion dollars to prevent a war, or multiple trillions and countless lives to fight one?
