What matters most here is the underlying assumptions made by the idiots who put this idea into motion in the first place:

1) That only blacks have ever gotten screwed over and all of them have

2) That everything whites own was illegitimately obtained

3) That blacks are owed insane amounts of money

All of which are extremely damaging assumptions to make for a society.

Most black Californians are descended from people who migrated from states like Texas or Louisiana during Jim Crow (or themselves migrated to California), people who moved to California for a better life. To perpetuate the lie that they were all treated badly and screwed over in California is ridiculous, let alone the idea that every wrong has a huge price tag based on race, not individual experience.

If the US had decent political, intellectual and business elites, we'd be focused on growing the economy to everyone's benefit rather than pushing deranged policies like this (no doubt also to burnish Gavin Newsom's credentials for the South Carolina presidential primary).

In all likelihood, these campaigns for reparations will one day lead to the path trod by Zimbabwean dictator Mad Bob Mugabe a quarter century ago- seizure of property owned by whites.

I think it's both terrible and hilarious. Does anyone remember who fought in the civil war and for what reasons? California did not exist as a state where slavery was legal at any point in us history, every state where slavery was legal did punish pretty much everyone living there with carpet baggers, and if it passes it would have nothing to do with black people.

More likely it would be to be the final straw to break the banking system and move to unified currency. More likely it wouldn't pass as there is no possible way for California to pay for it, unless they write the checks with debt and expect everyone moving out to repay the taxes with their income from Texas or Florida after they move...

It's insane. Who living in California today - people of all races and ethnicities - owes black people a dime?

I 100% supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that did away with racial segregation. But LBJ was a racist and didn't sign it out any sympathy for blacks. He did it to gain their support for the Democratic party. He said so.

This could be the only reason why the Democrat-dominated legislature of California is proposing this insane idea of reparations. It's also another excuse to raise taxes, including taxes on blacks.

You can guarantee that this political ploy has nothing to do with fairness.

It is actually insulting to blacks. It's like saying that they are all worthless and powerless and incapable of contributing to society like everyone else.

And why do blacks get preferential treatment? What about Native Americans who had virtually all of their land stolen and 99% of their people murdered.

You might be able to talk me into something like this with the right package. It makes more sense to "repatriate" and compensate. healing is required and freedom... for society and for those enslaved by the mentality. not so sure about his plan, no details.

We know what happens to people who gain instant wealth... it often doesn't go well. I think it's both good and bad, nor does it make sense. My kids don't have 1.2 million. We're handing babies 1.2 million?

Smart black people, whatever the definition of that is... and I suspect a lot of people will identify as black, would be having a lot of kids right now.

They also approved high speed trains 15 years ago which never came and reservoir projects to solve their water problems back in the 1980s which were never built. 40 years later still no progress on some of these promises. California is broke. They can make all sorts of false promises, but they have no way to pay for them. That's how communism works. The party officials steal all the workers funds to live lavish lives and then they give lip service to the peasants who live like shit but think the state is the answer to all their problems.

How many times is this going to come up on this site? This will never pass. It's not even legislation. It's not even done by the state legislators.

This was nothing but a recommendation by some nutty "independent" panel who can't do math. Forget about whether it's a good idea or not. It's not possible - simple arithmetic. It works out to something like 25X their current budget. Not even Democrats are that nutty.

If I'm not mistaken, California also has a balanced budget amendment in their constitution. So they can't even go massively in debt to do this.

It's a bad thing that you and Tim Pool are not telling the truth about the proposals.

If you go into a shop that says "up to 90% off", do you expect everything to be 90% off? No. The $1.2m is an upper limit on the proposed reparations.

A recipient has to prove various things to be able to claim a penny.

It's not all about slavery, either. It's about black GIs being excluded from the GI Bill after WWII. It's about black people being denied morgages to buy houses that built inter-generational wealth for the people that were allowed them. It's about laws and courts that disproportionately affected black people, like almost double sentences for black people than white people caught with crack, let alone the different sentences for crack vs. powder cocaine.

You can't unwind history. The world is not composed of slaves and owners. Many people are descended from both, and even more are descended from neither. Many people don't even know their ancestry. I don't see any even remotely fair way to figure out who pays and who gets paid
