A good guy with a gun?

Do people believe it takes a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun? Please tell me why or why not you believe this.

You wake up in the middle of the night to hear 3 men trying to break into your house. What do you do?

- Try to hide? You will be found. And they will be angrier.

- Try to surrender? You could be murdered, and your wife/girlfriend and/or kids could be murdered in front of you, or worse.

- Call the police? (i. e., a good guy with a gun)?

- Be your own good guy with a gun?

In my suburban town of 105,000 people, a high-priority call has a 5+ minute response time on average, with many areas longer than that. There are only 6 patrol cars in the entire town after midnight, and only 8-10 during the day/evening.

But in many more rural areas, response time is frequently 20-30 minutes or more, with smaller towns relying on the county sheriff. Does anyone think it's a viable defense strategy to wait 20-30 minutes for a police response to a present deadly threat?

I'd love to hear someone's alternate solution.

Of course not- and it's not a matter of belief, but of basic historical FACT: most of the time, what stops a bad man with a gun is another bad man with a gun. The people who liberated Finland from the Soviets were the Nazis, and you'd hardly call THEM good. Likewise, the people who liberated Poland from the Nazis were the Soviets, and, well, ditto.

The moral alignment of the person who shot you doesn't make you any more or less dead.

Yes it does and I do believe it. I don't believe a bad guy would stop a bad guy, only someone knowing right from wrong would.

It helps, for sure, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of good guy with gun.

I don't need a pound. I only need about 147 grains... roughly a third an ounce... maybe 393 grain if it's SCAR time.

Viable prevention is wonderful in concept, but that's like saying police prevent the guy from breaking in to begin with. You have to have a contingency for when prevention falls apart.

When you need the police right away they are only minutes away... A lot can happen in minutes.

Last time they came to my house it took them 34 minutes to get here. F'ing repair guy hadn't shut the door all the way. My alarm had gone off. I got the notification while I was at the hardware store. I got home, cleared the house, made sure the kitten was okay, went outside to grab a smoke and wait on the cops. When they didn't show up I stowed all my gear in my car again, went BACK inside, made a sandwich, went out to my upper deck, ate half of it and they come screaming down the road with their lights on. Thanks guys. Welcome to the party.

Good guy (s) or girl (s) with guns can often stop some jerk face from killing lots of people, yes. Does it always require it? No. The psycho might get clocked by someone who can get close enough, but I'd still rather have one of my firearms ready that have to rely on dodging bullets till I can knock him out.

Nope if u wanna stop the gun violence in America we have to take a page out of Japan's book ( just a page though not all their gun laws are reasonable for Americans ) as it's a bad year if they have more than 10 deaths due to firearms over here however that's just another week or 1 bad school shooting that won't be in the air for more than a few days

You can't seriously compare Japan - an insular mono-culture on an isolated island - with the US, the land of immigrants with dozens of competing cultures, massive illegal immigration, massive drug problems, etc. These situations aren't anywhere close to being similar.

By this reasoning, when Japanese move to the US, the murder rate should increase due to the availability of guns. Is that what happens? Nope.

Same goes for people who move to the US from any other country that has strict gun control laws.

So obviously something else is at play. There are statistics, after statistics, after statistics that clearly show that guns are NOT the cause. People who blame the availability of guns are just looking for an easy thing to blame for a problem that is much more complex than that.

In some cases it might not be absolutely necessary, but it's still a huge advantage. In other cases, it's the only way.

Why do I believe this? Because it's totally common sense.

I've been that good guy with a gun. I know three women that were good women with a gun when it came to protecting themselves.
