For those that are angry about those that dislike the new little mermaid, how would you feel if they made black panther white?

I guarantee those same people would be crying racism. How bout they make new original characters rather than race swapping.

And for the record, I'd be just as pissed off about making black panther a white person as I am about the little mermaid. It's not racism, it's staying true to the source material.

The Little Mermaid is a fairy tale of Danish origin and was originally conceived by writer Hans Christian Andersen, who was best known for his riveting fairy tales.

So, Hans Christian Anderson is a famous literally figure within Western literature. So as Americans, black or white, we have a shared heritage as Americans... and this a famous European fairy tale. So its disingenuous to replace the culturally accurate representation of characters. So it's like trying to remake the Movie "Color Purple" and replacing Opera with Rosey O'Donnel. It doesn't work honeslty.


It disingenuous. But I get is sells, because you can only remake the same story so many times. I love it when they make period-based movies, in the 1700 in France... and black people pop up in the film like they have always been., there and nobody thinks its odd.

You should be concern about what Disney is doing because they are not legitimately making things better.

Transforming a white character, into one of another ethnicity, doesn't says nothing else than affirming there are no other stories to tell, other than those written by white Authors.

Why don't they make animated movies based on non white authors stories?

Sort of a late response but I don't know how people here are not understanding this. The Little Mermaid has nothing to do with race, it doesn't mention the exact location, it doesn't mention Ariel as white person that is connected to an ethnic group. It's about a completely fictional creature.
It wouldn't make sense to make Black Panther white or Lilo and Stitch Filipino or the Princess and the Frog white or Princess Jasmine white or Hercules as an Asian, etc. Why? Because all those stories use an actual culture and ethnicity that is specific to a region that ties into the storytelling. Obviously Wakanda isn't real but you know it's supposed to be in Africa, representing African tribes.

Tell that to the Danish people... You know the origin of the story in 1837. In the book she was described as white with red hair. The only part you're correct about here is the location, the book by Hans Christian Anderson did not mention any specific locations. If you read the book as I have you'd know that... Nice try though

I have read the book. And yes, they did describe her features but if you read what I wrote: My point is they never tied it back to Danish culture like for example: Ariel had to save Denmark because she was Danish royalty or she comes from an indigenous Danish group who's family is under threat, I don't know. IF that were the case then obviously, Ariel would've been played by not only a white actress but a Danish one. And like you said: "Hans Christian Anderson did not mention any specific locations", this leaves room for interpretation as Ariel's race/ethnicity/culture doesn't impact the story.

Additionally, I do have to point out that Ariel's Little Mermaid is a character that was created by Disney that is an ADAPTATION of the Hans Christian Anderson story, which means they can do whatever they want with their creation and interpretation.

I would argue the same about black panther.. For the exact same reasons. Bottom line is your Reasons's for race swapping her are as valid as race swapping black panther.. Which they are not.

It most definitely does not work with Black Panther. Black Panther is set in Africa, makes use of tribal African culture and the concept of a non-colonized African society to tell their story. It is constantly mentioned and made point of throughout the whole movies even making use of traditional African rituals, particularly from Lesotho. It would absolutely not work.

You missed the point entirely.. I believe both should stay true to the source material. Both should respect the source material, end of story, end of discussion. But your have your head too far up your ass to understand that point.
