At the risk of being the dour pessimist, they are not apt to find the submersible. Even with detection devices like radar, sonar and the like, the area is simply too large, and the object is too small to put the odds in favor of the submersible being found and the people saved.

Consider this: Titanic sank in 1912. How long after that before its' location was discovered?

Titanic was a huge ship. The submersible is tiny by comparison. Just by that metric alone, the odds are not in favor of the submersible.

To be sure, I wish it were otherwise and I will not complain if I am proved wrong. Still, in any reasonable analysis and extrapolation of the data, the odds of the submersible being discovered are small. The odds that it will be discovered before those aboard suffocate less still.

About the most that can be said is that this should be a lesson to those who take for granted the bravery of those men and women who are on the cutting edge of science and exploration. It is not as easy as popular mythology would have it. Progress is NOT, after all, inevitable.

The Titanic was found in the 80s, I believe. And yes, it may be the cutting edge of technology, but corners were cut

On the first point, that was my point. On the second, undoubtedly human failings play their part even with the best of technologies.

The point being that the concatenation of factors and events make it - and now appears to have made it - all but impossible for the submersible to be found and its' crew and passengers to be saved. They took a risk all in the name of pleasure. (This was not a research effort.)

Sadly, it did not end well.

The whole story is weird. Even if everything went well, risking your life to scan and maybe prederve the titanic wreck a bit longer doesn't seem like that great of a cause to me where it would be worth it. Even if you're into history I don't think the Titanic is that historically significant. It feels like they were in it for the thrill more than the actual mission. Maybe that was the problem.

Regrettably I must admit in both thinking and saying that personally I now consider them to have perished, and therefore joined the thousand plus lost souls of the Titanic.

It would somewhat be ironic if it now takes as long to find the remains of the submarine, as it did to find the Titanic!

The CEO cut corners and didn't want to hire experienced submariners because "they were a bunch of 50 year-old white guys" and said that a 25 year-old trained to pilot the sub with a video game controller 🎮 was just as good. So I have zero sympathy for him, it just sucks that he literally dragged other people down with him.

The death of the Ocean Gate founder and CEO who was the pilot on this ship is evolution in action. As much of a genuis as he was, his arrogance did him in.

The adventurer knew he's been playing Russian Roulette for decades. So, his loss is evolution in action too, but, still, it's a shame.

The French Titanic expert's loss is a shame. He was an absolute expert who'd been on the Titan several times.
