I'm not a submariner, but I assume some part of it gained a rupture under pressure. It takes very little at that depth (approximately 1hr and 15 minutes into a 2hr descent is when it lost contact and it most likely happened around the same time) to instantly crumple a submarine. There's a good chance the people onboard didn't even have time to think about it when it happened. To put this into perspective, the USS Thresher imploded and killed everyone onboard (129) instantly at about 900 meters, which isn't even half as deep as this submersible would've been.

I'm willing to bet that despite whatever was communicated to the press that the "rescue" crews were already pretty certain of the outcome almost immediately after getting briefed, especially if the Navy reported detecting the sound of what could've been an implosion in that area. Between the media constantly drooling for clickbait and the usual government stance of feeding false hopes and sugar coating everything all the time, it also wouldn't surprise me if they knew and withheld the findings until the story about oxygen reserves ran out of time.

The submersible was made of carbon fiber that was never fully tested to see how it reacts to repeated pressurization cycles. Its shell goes from equal inside and outside pressure at the surface to huge pressure differences at depth and back to equal pressure back at the surface. When this is done repeatedly (this was not its first dive), the shell is going to compress and stretch, several times. Its likely a small stress fracture developed that ruptured at depth, causing the implosion, and the almost instantaneous deaths of all onboard.

It could have been intentional, but we will never know. What I find interesting is that I heard that a whistleblower from the Navy said that the Navy knows that this implosion happened on Sunday. The reason they had to come clean on Thursday, was because it was already announced that the oxygen when run out by then. But by keeping it secret from the public, it allowed them to divert attention away from Hunter and onto the sub. It worked.

At 12,000 feet, you're under more pressure that you would be anywhere else in the solar system, outside of the surface of the sun (and possibly some parts of Jupiter; the jury's still out on that). One advantage of that is that a hull rupture- even if it's just a pinhole leak- will kill you so quickly that you won't have time to feel pain. You don't drown, you BURN. But you burn  fast , and you're dead before the pressure crushes you.

It imploded, big difference.
The pressure of the sea caused it to implode because the submersible, not submarine, is not built to handle that much pressure and the CEO is 100% responsible for those deaths including his own since he refused to listen and adhere to safety concerns and protocols.

They went down in an unproven material and it imploded upon them. They had no concept of what happened. They died instantly. Why did they even want to go down that far anyway and look at a stupid wreck that's been there for 113 years. That's my opinion.

It imploded, not exploded. Most likely from metal fatigued from the pressure hull not getting inspected properly. Another theory could be from fastener shear. From what I understand, the pressure hull had a bolted on cover. Metal contracts at those pressures and if the cover contracted differently than the hull, snap goes the bolt. At that depth, all it would take is a single crack.

I do not know the actual cause but I heard it was probably due to low safety standards. Kinda typical of capitalism to take more risks to increase profits without accounting for the cost in case if fails.
