The whole idea of reparations is ludicrously insane. In theory and in practice. Even if you believe in the idea, there's still no practical way to make it happen with tax dollars, and to make it happen properly. Examples:

There are hundreds of thousands of African Americans who lived in this country (up north, out west, etcetera) prior to slavery being abolished who were never slaves. Why would their descendants be entitled to receive reparations?

There are millions of people of African descent who have immigrated to this country or were born here after slavery was abolished. Why would they and their descendants be entitled to receive reparations?

There are millions of people of non-African descent who were in this country prior to slavery being abolished who never owned slaves. Why would their descendants be obligated to pay reparations?

There are millions of people of non-African descent who have immigrated to this country or were born here after slavery was abolished (my family as an example). Why would they and their descendants be obligated to pay reparations?

If there are individual people in this country who want to pay reparations or receive reparations, then you can all get together without the government and without using any tax dollars and start a GoFundMe. Have fun.

Even if there were huge direct transfers of cash via reparations, the flood of dollars into the economy would be highly inflationary. This would reduce the value of the payout for those who received reparations and further impoverish the population that did not receive reparations. If the elites want people to receive reparations, the only real way to do it is to take assets like rental properties, ownership shares of companies, and land (overwhelmingly held by the elites) and redistribute those. This will obviously not be allowed to happen.

Furthermore, the sum of assistance and damages paid to individual Native Americans had been far less than the figures being proposed for direct payments to African Americans, certainly not enough to move the needle on inflation.

I’ve been to many reservations and places with concentrations of Native populations in these areas and I can assure you that whatever assistance or damages they have received has not been enough to lift many out of poverty or near-poverty, let alone cause inflation. Also, the transportation of goods in the US is such that aside from real estate a concentration of wealth in a locale will not considerably affect prices.

@OddBeMe I’ve seen a wide range of outcomes from one reservation to another. A lot depends on factors like the abundance or lack of local resources and jobs, the quality or level of corruption in the tribal council, decisions within the BIA, etc. Sometimes the outcomes seem arbitrary. One reservation might get nice new houses, another is stuck with whole extended families sharing leftover FEMA trailers. In some cases cash payments fund alcohol abuse for the most part. In others, outcomes are more positive.

I think this is more difficult to achieve than it would seem, especially with the centralized, byzantine behemoth that is the USG, but I wouldn’t mind seeing some of the $1 trillion military budget diverted to such attempts.

The whole premise of discussing reparations that can't be paid without seizing property owned by whites is based on Democrats' desires to distract everyone from the fact that their public policy has been a disaster for most descendants of slaves and certainly for the country as a whole. Firstly I don’t know where this old guy is getting his stats. I would be interested in seeing his data. Because I don’t think that many whites owned slaves. It was only major slave owners or slave traders.

But second, it’s not citizens who will pay reparations. It’s the government who allowed enslavement. So this guy didn’t prove shit.

Thank you for understanding that. Dude….. what? Switzerland was neutral during WW2. What did they pay reparations?

Anyway. The Jews should have been paid. They were still alive…. remarkably some are today, and the ones who committed the crime were still alive.

As for the blacks, no one who owned slaves, nor was a slave is alive. People who were not the victims of crimes should not be receiving compensation for crimes.

As for the natives, same story. On top of them at LEAST 60% of the land was not stollen from them. The either sold it or traded it or lost it in war by allying with the wrong side. Such tribes deserve NO compensation. Particularly in the case of the Comanche, who were no different than a street gang on horses. They murdered, robbed, plundered and raped their way through the plains, unprovoked killing and enslaving Mexican and White settlers alike and killing them. Then we have the Kiowa, their allies who were provided government rations and allowed to live off reservations….. until they made peace treaties and in fact deliberately lied and attacked wagon trains for extra gain. We have almost every tribe on the east coast who allied with the British in BOTH the American Revolution and War of 1812 and lost. You pick the wrong side in a conflict and loose, it’s gonna cost you land. That is no different than what happens in Europe, Asia, Africa, South and Central America or anywhere else. Those lands were not stollen. You have literally the entire Great Plains who the French bought the land from. BOUGHT, and then sold it to us in the Louisiana Purchase. MANY tribes sold A LOT of land in exchange for European goods. Let’s stop telling fanciful tales of land theft and start telling the truth as to not perpetrate the myth of stollen land.
