Partly it is poorly structured, especially in how your politics works resulting in a two party system. You do not vote for who you like the most, you vote against you you like the least. The result is the country is controlled by the least of two evils at the best of times.

This combines very poorly with the second reason, corruption. Power and wealth attracts corruption like flies and as the worlds number 1 super power USA also becomes the number one focus of corruption. With such a vulnerable system that I talked about previously it becomes childsplay to corrupt it and begin turn it to your own benefits.

And finally we come to the finale. Because you see, what people think of corruption is just the beginning of it. What if corruption begins to dig deep and become more fundamental to your society? USA is no stranger to corruption, it goes back to its very founding and major events like the civil war.

In other words, it has infiltrated your culture. There is a saying, that democracy gives you the leader that the people deserve. Giving you a better system and strangling corruption does not detract from the fact that you have a large number of people, maybe around 30% of your population, that have such a twisted worldview that they actively work against their own self interest.

Quite frankly I am not even sure how you would fix such a problem when the person in question does not want to be "fixed" and with such a cancer in your society you are going to suffer for a long time to come.

The American system depends on checks and balances, with the natural result that nothing ever gets done. It's also extremely corrupt, because Americans are basically a nation of thieves and grifters.
