It shouldn't be surprising at all.
In 2016, it was evident that Hillary Clinton was "The Anointed One" by the Democratic Establishment. This was a conspiracy that was actually true and rather easy to see. Unfortunately, Hillary Clinton, despite being a very effective candidate and qualified for the job - much more so than Trump - she had a likeability problem. But, more importantly, young people in this country have faced challenges that many older Americans like me did not (*) and what Sanders was proposing was actually going to help them. Clinton really didn't offer much to young people. So, when Sanders' campaign was effectively and quite evidently torpedoed by the collusion between the Democratic Establishment and the Clinton campaign, it estranged many young voters. They felt the system is rigged - rigged against them in particular - and that's a reasonable assumption to make. Feeling alienated, they just didn't bother voting. Hillary having lost a nontrivial fraction of the youth vote, she'd go on to lose states she should have won.

Of course, part of this was her own fault too; for instance, taking certain blue states for granted and not campaigning there (like Wisconsin), so that didn't help her case. Same with all the shit hurled by the GOP like the emails and Benghazi.

She had the chance to make history, but her own missteps and alienation by the Democratic Establishment did her in and handed Trump the victory via the Electoral College.

(*) I didn't have kids because, since about 1982, I could see that the world was going to Hell in a handbasket fast and that my kids, living in the world that was coming, were going to suffer - suffer the way you young people are now. I love my kids and the only way that I knew I could protect them from this shitstorm was to not have them.

Also, I was a Sanders supporter too because he was right all along. People are too stupid to realize that and it will take about 40-50 years until they wake up and do the right thing. I did vote for Hillary, but I almost didn't. I was furious too because, to me who is older, it was obvious what was going on to fuck over Sanders. So, I ask myself, "Should I __reward__ this behavior with my vote for Hillary?" I strongly considered not voting for her even though I actually liked her and thought she'd be a good President. However, with Trump winning the GOP nomination and the US Supreme Court at stake (as we know see how fucked up it is), I voted for Hillary because I could not vote for the GOP in 2016 - too much at stake and, with Trump, that was not going to be good.

And what made it worse is those rustbelt states were negatively affected by crappy trade deals Hillary herself championed. What's a person in rustbelt states going to do, vote for the person who championed crappy trade deals or the person campaigning against them. Those same trade deals Hillary championed, Sanders opposed, so less collateral damage in rust belt states.
