Oh far we have come in car/carseat safety!

Oh far we have come in car/carseat safety!
In the example shown , no seat at all would be far better..
There are very very few car seats sold here , only maybe amongst the upper crust do you see some nice seats , its basically baby / pets on motor bikes , carried by mum , or if there is a car nursed in the car , no seat belts of course. Just the opposite of ludicrously over regulated Australia , where you need a certificate if you wish to pass wind.
But is it dangerous? Sure , but self responsibility comes into play , fatalist life choices.
So yeah , we haven't come far at all , most of todays products are sold on guilt , but that metal example looks worse sure.
That's nothing, and I'm not even sure that's real, because I never saw anything like that, and I was born in 1976. Anyway, the reason I'm stating that's nothing, is because when my younger brother and I were little kids, we legitimately fought over who got to ride in between the back of the rear headrests and the rear window whenever my mother went grocery shopping, or whenever she would take us to Child World (a long defunct toy store).
My parents had a '62 VW Bug and it had this "luggage" compartment behind the back seat. I used to love to ride in that on long trips. It was carpeted and big enough for me to fall asleep in. Car seats? Kids are too pampered these days!

We didn't even have that. I was just held in the front seat while a parent wore just a lap belt. It is insane compared to today's standards but I do find it funny 9 year olds are still in boosters and can't sit in the front seems ridiculous too. Emphasis on the word seems (to me because of my age) but I know it's still the right thing for safety.

In the 80’s we were dare devils & didn’t use car seats or wear seatbelts as well have any of the safety features that cars have to day.
The windshield was the air bag lol
My first car was a 1981 Mercury Grand Marquis Colony Park LS station wagon with the duel-facing rear seats in the wayback, room for 11 people, simulated wood paneling all around, freon air conditioning that worked like a meat locker, roof rack for street lugging, and the etch-a-roof all around the inside that was probably asbestos. Good times.
@NYCQuestions1976 haha. I remember those station wagons.
No surprise. Seat belts weren't mandatory in the USA until 1968, and if your vehicle was made before 1964, you were exempt. I'll say this much - that kid was safer riding in a car in 1970 than kids were drinking tap water in Flint, Michigan in 2022.
yeah them good ol days lol.
i remember my dad had built us this crude looking treehouse. it had a slide a ladder and a tiny shack on top. whenever we slid down we always got splinters because the wood handles on the sides weren't smoothed out... but dammit it was still fun lol. we had to take out our splinters everytime afterward. yup those were the days
im being ironic when i say 'good ol days' by the way. things are much much safer now a days
I think I had the one with the little steering wheel. Then we had an old Ford. My father took out the back seat and put down a piece of plywood and covered it with a blanket. My brother and I used it as a playpen.
No. Cars were built "solid" in those days, plus they were not driving close to the speeds cars are capable of now. So that was actually "enough" for back then.
It absolutely wasn't enough... "Solid" isn't good
It absolutely wasn't enough. Adults went through windshields and cars were not absorbing impact before crumple zones. The speed limit which hasn't changed much would be fast enough to kill an adult and have a baby fly out of the bands of a parent. Bad accidents caused the innovation and safety improvements because it was a problem.
car seat technology have come a long way. My dad would of had nothing back in the day but most of the time he did not even had a car to ride in.
when I was young I could not wait to get 40lb to get out of the booster seat
My parents had a minibus in the seventies and we put a cot in it for the little ones when we went on holiday. No mandatory seat belts back then either or head rests and the car designs were not safety first.
lol, no one got that much in the 70s. They were in the far back of a station wagon inhaling automobile exhaust while their parents hotboxed them with Marlboro reds
At least she's somewhat restrained. Before the 70s, no one used seatbelts.
It's amazing how far we came since then isn't it? I used to ride in the back of a pickup truck. When I was 3 or 4 years old.
At least you had a shotgun to defend yourself, right? 😬
My parents didn't own any guns
Car seat?
I remember when people STARTED wearing seat belts. No one used to put those things on.
And many suffered the consequence.
What's insane is that that IS safety, because there is no seat belt in the back there.
It’s perfectly safe as long as you don’t get in a crash.
What use of a safety seat inside a metal coffin?
At least it is in the back seat. Before that people just held them in the front seat.
I never even had that in the seventies.
Most didn't have that much
That's how we survived back in the day.
Many didn't.
Yes this is insane
If that's real, that just crazy
It was ridiculous back then
Hey this swing
