A conflux of factors: the establishment of widespread peace in Europe, the Byzantine empire slowly collapsing, and the Pope badly misreading the situation.
That's what kicked it all off; what kept it going was a lack of religious devotion and an overabundance of opportunistic greed.

Geopolitics for one. Turks and Syrians were knocking on Constantinoples doors. Religion of course. Jerusalem is the site of three religions’ holiest places.

But like everything…greed is the biggest draw. Plunder, killing, etc. Ironically, the crusades probably saved Europe from another plague. As Christendom adopted Muslim hygienic practices.

  Religion has no lands.. people do.. there were no such thing called christian lands.. Egypt for example had many religions over the course of its long history.. Amon whorship, Aton, christianity and islam.. you can't say egypt was Amon lands or christian lands... you have a problem with ISLAM dude.. leave it out of the discussion or just shut up if you can't

I think religion was the excuse, a way to convince foot soldiers to risk their lives on an invasion for profit. I think most religious wars are like that.
