To defend Israel's sovereignty and political interests. Afghanistan doesn't have oil and Syria's reserves are pretty small. And while oil is a major resource for Iraq, their reserves are smaller than both Canada and Venezuela. That's also why despite Israel being involved with events like 9/11, the USS Liberty, and the Apollo Affair, the US is still very close allies with them.

@Cheerfull009 Yeah, our news media covers it up both by lying to everybody and by omitting details, but if you dig into it, it's very obvious that 9/11 was an operation conducted by the United States, Israel, and possibly Saudi Arabia.
They found Mossad agents (who were pretending to be a moving company) taking pictures of the twin towers and dancing around with joy after the planes hit. Then the FBI "investigated" them and let them go. It's pretty obvious what's going on.
Unfortunately, most Americans don't know this information because it's kept hidden from us and many won't even believe it even if you tell them about it because they don't understand American media is a well-oiled propaganda machine.

Oil/gas. The US has its own oil/gas reserves a long with fracking, nuclear power and renewable energy sources but would strategically would rather use up Middle Eastern resources first. This policy makes those oil nations rich bug when the oil runs out those riches will run out. For instance the US has been propping up the Saudi royal family for years, if it didn't Saudi Arabia would explode in extremism. Anyway the US buys Middle Eastern oil/gas at a low price in exchange for consumer goods and military equipment. To keep the middle east from uniting and looking more money for their oil/gas they keep them divided.

@Cheerfull009 occupying Syria was unlikely a goal of the US. Eliminating Libya as a Russian ally by either bringing them over the the US hegemony and if that doesn't work sowing chaos as a warning just like with Syria. They did the same thing with all those Arab spring countries, Egypt for instance knew to side with the US.
Gaddafi had to die as a warning to others who attack America especially other dictators. The airliner or the civilians didn't matter, the attack did. That's why Osama got hunted down, as well as ISIS and Al queda leaders years later.
