Oil? Because we are greedy and our consumption based industrial economy is fueled by energy. Other people have energy and we want it or we want to control it.

Because if we don't control the oil in the middle east Russia or China will move in and do it instead. The war in Ukraine is a textbook example why it's a terrible idea to let them do that and China is eyeballing Tiawan. The more resources they have the more dangerous they are and the more people they can hurt. It's basically about keeping global order and preventing massive wars like WW1 and WW2. Part of why we're in this mess now is we've been shying away from the hard decisions necessary to keep the greater peace. We were supposed to defend Ukraine by treaty but we didn't. We were supposed to stop non nuclear powers from making nuclear weapons and we did fuck all until Netanyahu of all people finally did something right and forced our hand. That's the short and simple answer.

People saying Oil as if that matters, Oil profits for sure. But the main reason is to of course stop Iran getting nukes or other Islamic extremists getting to be such a big threat. If America just left them alone, eventually they would become a super power that could rival the more peaceful nations which America is one of them.
We don't want another Russia or China that already put freedom countries in threat by them just existing. And Islam have a strong history of killing for their religion, so does Christians but one actually stopped, the other is still very much in the position of not doing so.
