Everything can be compared, it doesn't mean it's been equated. Stalin was in power for 30 years, Putin is in his 24th year, with no end in sight. Putin destroyed the independent press, the opposition and the NGOs. The Russian people are numb and passive, they know the unwritten rules by now. Individuals brave enough to still challenge Putin get murdered or land in prison for twenty years. Nothing indicates this will change.

Stalin had just won a world war and created the powerhouse that the USSR became at its peak of power. You could argue that Putin is attempting to become the next Stalin, but what you can't argue is that he's as efficient. And you can call people naive to think that he can't be stopped, but you're naive of the circumstances that Putin is in and compare them to someone like Stalin who can't be compared. Their ideologies are also not the same.

The USSR was not a super power instantly. They were broke. In the 50s during mayday celebrations they had their heavy bombers fly in circles to pretend they had more.
All that huge military build up, atomic development and space rocket development expenditure cost them. All through the cold War the Soviets were stuck in the 30s.
The USSR in the war against the nazis was completely supplied by the US and British while at the same time attacking German industry and tying the German military down on other fronts.

And everyone was broke after the war. Except the US that was untouched because the US wasn’t bombed. But the USSR had war reparations, influence, the largest army, a military industrial complex, and plenty of land. They became a superpower instantly after the war.

Who were Germany's allies? Italy? Romania? Hungary? Vichy France? Croatia? Slovakia? How much help were they.
The war was far from over by D-Day. The nazis were still inside Russia with a strength of about 1 million men. The western allies had tied down 600,000 German soldiers in Normandy, 1 million German & Italians in Italy, 300,000 Germans in Norway. Then then there's all the luftwaffe units that were withdrawn from the Eastern front to defend Germany from the bombers and of course all the anti air defenses like the dreaded 88 that was so deadly against Russian tanks. Then if you consider how much resources the Germans spent building submarines to stop Britain and the US supplying the USSR, how many tanks can be built for one submarine? Then there was cutting off Germany from its oil supplies and destroying its oil production centres, German armies couldn't maneuver, advance or retreat when it came to fighting the USSR and they had trouble getting supplies.
The Russians lost more people because battles in cities kill another of civilians especially when the Soviets refused to let them evacuated and of course starvation.
Spain and Portugal were broken after WW2 but they didn't fight.
The US wasn't broke because it had taken a lot of French and British gold over two world wars in exchange for weapons and resources and had gained access to trade in the old European empires.
The USSR spent decades trying to extract reparations from Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia but they had nothing really left to give. What they had was a large army that the US had fed during the war and put boots on their feet. They had plenty of land but struggled still to produce food.
Just goes to show how the US beat the nazis.

They weren't in full retreat. They were holding position and the Russians were pushing them back. If the Germans were in full retreat it wouldn't have take a whole year for the USSR to reach Berlin. No the wermarct was still fighting.

Operation Barbarossa ran out of steam due to a lack of supplies thanks to the western allies tying up resources, the trade blockade and the bombing of Germany's industry, oil reserves and of course the USSR being supplied by Britain and America with everything they needed to win. Just like the soviet leadership admitted too after WW2.
Yeah the generals of the USSR believed after WW2 that the USSR could not have defeated the Nazis without the US & British supplying them.
Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov is quoted as saying:
"Today [1963] some say the Allies didn't really help us... But listen, one cannot deny that the Americans shipped over to us material without which we could not have equipped our armies held in reserve or been able to continue the war"
