Some schools now call September 11th, "Patriots Day" and have the kids dress in red white and blue.. anyone else bothered by this?

To me it just feels like it is taking the context out of what this day is about. I personally see it as a solid day of remembrance, not another 4th of July.

Well, yes, I am a little but it is understandable.

Soon after 9/11, there were some calls to turn it into a holiday called "Patriots' Day", but that was downplayed for the same reason we don't have a holiday on 12/7 (the date in 1941 of the attack on Pearl Harbor).

However, there already _IS_ a Patriots' Day. It is a legal holiday in the states of Massachusetts and Maine (*). It occurs on the third Monday in April and celebrates the beginning of the Revolutionary War. (The battles of Concord and Lexington occurred on 19 APR 1775.) The Boston Marathon is run on Patriots' Day. I also think that the Boston Red Sox always have a home game that day too.

Patriots' Day is close to Tax Day (April 15) and sometimes they are the same day. I loved that because, when I lived in upstate NY and Tax Day was during Patriots' Day Weekend, I didn't need to have my taxes done for an extra day because my Federal taxes went to Amherst MA.

(*) Patriots' Day is celebrated in Maine because, at the time of the Revolution, Maine was not a distinct state, but still part of Massachusetts. Maine became its own state in 1820.

Don’t mind it. Just makes me feel old. It doesn’t surprise me that a bunch of foreigners on this site want to engrain this in American minds. Like a “you got what you deserved” kind of thing. We’ve had plenty of tragic events in US history that don’t get their own holiday. Some of you guys really are assholes.

I’m not exactly sure what’s patriotic about the anniversary of a terrorist attack but I’m guessing it’s an attempt to put a positive spin on the occasion for kids. I’m with you though, it should be more of a somber day of remembrance. To each their own though.

Remembrance of what? My question is can you do it 100 years from now? I can be patriotic 100 years from now. What point it is to remember dead people from over a 100 years ago. To remember what happened 100 years ago. The 4th isn't about what happened on that day or the days near it. It is about freedom. Remembering the lost all makes sense if the losses keep coming. 9/11 isn't happening every year.

Pretty much everything you have ever experienced has been EXACTLY this; the rich distorting and defining for you what reality is because they are the ones who killed all those people and they don't want you to think or know about that.

There is nothing patriotic about remembering the thousands who died in a series of terrorist attacks. Schools that do that should have their heads examined. Would you wear an American flag to your grandmother's funeral?

September 11 is not just about those who died. It's about America being attacked on its own soil, banding together as a nation, getting past it together and being stronger, NOT weaker like the attackers wanted.

In recent years there has been a lot of rhetoric from AMERICANS against American patriotism, which is disgusting. I support this because it's an opportunity to teach kids to have some pride in being American. They get very little of that elsewhere.

Sept. 11 th. Was a very fucked up day. I don't want it to be "celebrated", but remembered with anger and a realization that such attacks can happen anywhere and any time.

I was at a facility training before the attacks and learned later I passed the Saudi terrorist pilots several times in the hallways. Fucked up indeed.
