The net wealth of the U. S. is about 135 trillion dollars. The government debt is 30 trillion or similar, but the richest 1% of Americans could pay this off from their own combined wealth.

So when you say "we" as a U. S. person, then you should count not only the debts of your government, but also the much greater financial wealth of your population, even if you personally may not own a fair share of it.
