Jarrah wasn’t a nerd, but as you wrote he grew up in a secular family, drank alcohol, had a girlfriend and went to parties. That’s why there was tension between him and Atta. There is also evidence that the leaders (KSM, UBL) wanted to recruit a new trainee pilot because they were afraid Jarrah could go off board.

Well, his most known mug shot really is an unfavorable one, but I agree. There is talk about Atta being a closeted homosexual, because he was so uptight, radical and zealous all the time for fear of being found out.
