Neat? Yes. Practical? Only in certain areas. I'm a rail fan so I like the idea, but I can only see it being practical in routes such as:
Dallas to Houston.
San Fran. to San Diego.
L. A. to Las Vegas.
New York to Wash. DC.
I think that you would love Brightline
The US is a much larger country than Japan, with large areas of sparse settlement. The Shinkansen runs at 320kph (200mph). Trains are practical in densely settled areas like the East coast. They are not as practical for trips between, say, Seattle and Chicago. That's a four hour flight. At 200mph it would be a ten hour train ride, plus the time for any stops. The construction and land acquisition cost would be enormous -- tens or hundreds of billions of dollars.
We have Amtrak, but they are a joke compared to European trains and the Shinkansen
Yes, Amtrak is horrible outside the Boston-Washington corridor.
It would be game over for Amtrak if we have something like Shinkansen here
