Why can GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS get away with RACISM and SEXISM?

Donald Trump promised to nominate a black woman to a federal judge position, and did.

Joe Biden promised to have a black woman as his Vice President, and did.

Now, California Governor Gavin Newsome is naming a black woman to fill Diane Feinstein's senate seat.

We have nothing against blacks nor against women, but...

The US Supreme Court has ruled against minority quotas in colleges and universities, so...

How is it that government officials can make decisions based solely on race and sex in clear violation of anti-discrimination laws?

Are they really above the law?

I’d say it’s ok to attempt to diversify fields that need it. I also think we shouldn’t be operating on the assumption that people who are men and/or white are inherently the most qualified, or that the perceived need for diversity was prompted by women or non-white people holding themselves back through sheer lack of qualifications or lack of effort towards obtaining qualifications in the first place. I feel like we act like we pulled someone off the custodial staff to be a judge or whatever, lmao. I always liked the old Chris Rock joke about Affirmative Action where he said something to the effect of “Listen, I don’t think I should get a job that a white man is more qualified for, I’m just saying that, if it’s a tie….. FUCK ‘EM! You had a 400 year head start!” 😂😂😂

But anyway, to more directly answer, I think of quotas as legal mandates. If any business or agency wants to field a diverse staff, I’d figure that’s their right. If you start having hard numbers documented somewhere that you try to hit, that’s probably too far. But on the other side of the coin, discrimination doesn’t have a quota either, that can be a company culture thing. For everyone that gets a job because they’re a minority, I bet multiple people DIDN’T get a job for that same reason, and it’s all hidden within the hiring manager’s psyche, it can almost never be tangibly proven, but easily accomplished. You also have to consider recent generations suffering through worse employment/education climates than today are just the parents and grandparents of today’s people, and that impacts your outcomes in life a lot. Most people do not see social mobility more than one slot upward, if it all, than where their parents were at.

I like the idea of diversification where needed as there can be different viewpoints and value. It's one reason I've been promoting more southern hillbilly, hicks and rednecks get into the nyc school system. There are none... nadda nil. especially lacking white male hillbillies... and they could use good jobs. It's so not diverse. They'd provide a good balance for the students.

@Agagagagaga I’m sure someone catches a bad one once in a while, but there are plenty of other jobs than just whatever one someone didn’t get. Not for nothing, when I worked at Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister, we’d be sent around the mall to recruit good looking people (discrimination in its own right) to apply for jobs with us, and we’re told to “prioritize blondes.”

In other words, “white.”

yes they are and in general, as long as it favors "black". try saying "I'm going to nominate a chinese man and see how that goes... or anyone else. It sounds like fairness when someone favors black. They could talk about how not diverse a group is and go to represent that group... it's still "ism".

Kamala harris is not black, can we stop that... she's mixed. She's as black as I am indian.

Actually the way I remember it Biden said he would select a woman vice president and then Tammy Klobuchar refused the vetting process and thought Biden should select a woman of color. This didn't necessarily have to be a black woman as Tammy Duckworth could have been considered as well. Anyway, to answer your questions, yeah I think they shouldn't announce that they are specially going to do this. They should just look for qualified candidates and if they happen to be a woman or a person of color than we should assume they were qualified for the job.

If the universities were like jobs, wouldn't you (in general) hire the best person? Regardless of m/f and race/nationality?

These elected officials had the right to make these appointments and the Constitution does not seem to apply EO law to political appointees, which these de facto are.

I think you can probably offer a position or a job to anybody you want without significant repercussions legally. Socially there may be repercussions, but most politicians seem immune to this.
