meh. language that starts out in a location tends so spread. consider the slang terms of the 90s, dude, bro, brotha, homie, what up, yo, etc, etc. all of those have spread behind any one culture to simply become part of our language.

unless someone is trying to sound like someone, in which case i think it is just being fake, using slang/ebonics/whatever, is fine with me

People of any color speaking ebonics sound dumb. There's a reason my surgeon, dentist and accountant don't talk like that.

Anyone who speaks with ebonics is unintelligent.

@jahaims it's cultural appropriation to take an established language, butcher it, then claim it as something new and valid.

@jahaims And you'd better learn it's "ASK", not "AXE"

Actually, ask was pronounced ax originally. It comes from old English.

@jahaims lol, yeah that’s where the Ebonics folks got it, from researching ancient English texts.

It was how English was spoken around early African slaves so it stuck around as part of the culture. It is also used in the bible for example. Matthew 7:7 was written as “Axe and it shall be given you." Christiany was popular among African American slaves.

What an unintelligent response. Dismissive solely because you realize how ignorant you are. This information is widely available and verifiable. Thank you for proving my point.

@jahaims lol, you're claiming that "axe" is leftover from slaveowners language that the slaves picked up on, but the slave owners themselves didn't retain that language... that's what you're going with, right?

Do you not understand cultural influences on language? You do realize that English spoken in different countries is different due to cultural influences, right? American English is different from British English, for example. Even different parts of the United States have examples of this. Black culture and white culture were intentionally segregated. Obviously, that is going to have an effect culturally on a language.

@jahaims you're claiming there was no social interactions between whites and blacks from the time of the civil war until the civil rights movement. I think you might need a bit more education.

Using Ebonics is a choice you make. So I don't want to hear about someone talking about slavery. I was shocked once when I was in a restaurant in Florida, and the black waiter spoke to Queens English.

You've probably seen the video, but if not, go on YouTube and look up. Bill Cosby pound cake speech.

Bill Cosby hated Ebonics. He said. Imagine if your surgeon talked like that.

@WhiteSandyBeach thanks for the link. in full context it still shows you how an individual of color should act regardless of their background. it did harp on the mothers but the mothers learned the same way. therefore it's left up to the teachers and neighbors and the entire village to to shape the mind of the child. poverty is incredibly to blame. but if bill and jesse can make it out of the ghetto then can't kid of color get a job and use his brain the same way? there's an easy way and a hard way to do things. and buying that pound cake is so much harder than killing a guy for it.

at this point in time, i think people do know better and choose to do worse.
