I have seen gas prices go down the past few weeks. It was 3.29 a gallon down about 50 cents in the last month. I have tried to figure out what is behind this. Itis a combination of a warmer than usual winter so people are not using heating oil and worldwide production of oil has increased. The government has encouraged foreign countries to produce more oil to lower gas prices. This is just a ploy to get Biden re-elected. You can expect if he gets re-elected the first thing he will do is wage war on fossil fuel. His campaign to make everyone drive a battery powered car is not over if he gets re-elected. You can expect to pay over 5 bucks a gallon for gas again.

+1 yWe should be moving away from fossil fuels. However, sales of electric cars have plummeted because no infrastructure exists to "fuel" them.
Few people can afford an electric car, No. 1. But the big No. 2 is, where will we recharge our cars? No. 3 is, if you have one of these cars, you need to install some kind of giant plug to recharge it while it's parked. I live in a city where 85% of cars park on the street. Is my electric utility going to install recharging stations every other car parking site?
And how large will these car park-recharging sites be if a large percentage of people are driving SUVs and trucks?
What Biden should really be pushing is PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, which saves on pollution, parking, and all this infrastruction that will cost trillions of dollars.
And the fact is cars that are electric that are powered by coal-using utilities and natural gas-utilities are GIANT polluters! And a big percentage of our electricity is being used by home heating and cooling! And transportation. Our car use and moving goods to and from homes and stores. 30% commercial and residential. 29% transportation. 30% industrial production. 11% agriculture.
We should be focusing on making homes and businesses energy efficient. Our grid is old. THAT needs to be madean an efficient producer/carrier before we consider slapping another energy guzzler on it. If everyone drove an electric car today, the grid would collapse.
This is why old-school public transportation and neighborhoods based on walking, not driving, are excellent options. Also bicycle-lane support. This means enough room for adult three-wheelers for older riders.
Optimization of solar energy, with current stats says we should get about 11%-13% of our energy from solar. But consider how solar works. If we put solar farms over every open piece of land, we'd affect natural environments: halt native animal and plant production. That's no good either.
Sticking solar on every roof available in high sun-production sections of the country-- places like Arizona, New Mexico, southern Cal and all the Deep South states, might increase those figures. But that also means removing tree overhangs, and trees provide summer cooling in hot regions. But unless those trees lose leaves during the winter to allow more sun over roofs, they aren't doing an efficient job either.
It is a "wicked" problem, meaning there are many issues connected to it that ALL need to interact for an efficient solution. This takes cooperative citizens AND dedicated government- support - people lowering thermostats and recycling programs. It means we all have to work at this and cooperate and be innovative.
We also have to be a little uncomfortable. We have to invest in ceiling and wall insulation and have programs to support those who aren't wealthy enough to do so. And buildings have to be built without huge fancy atriums and giant windows, which, though pretty, cost fortunes to air condition and heat. Architects, as well as we idiots, need to turn thermostats up past 78 in the summer and leave them around 65 in the winter.
If it's 94 out, 80 degrees inside feels great. But I know folk who keep homes at 70 and sleep under blankets in the summer! And 75 when it's 25 outside. Wasteful overuse has to be drummed out. I don't have all the answers, but that's for people smarter than me.

There is a field near where I work. It was a vacant lot so the city build a solar energy farm there. I am not sure how much electricity it sullies the city but it was built it is row after row of solar panels. Wjhaty they did not think about was that the vegetation will grow all over them. If you dis not know there were solar panels were there, you would just drive right by it.
- +1 y
sure, it makes electricity, but how much does that "lot" solar farm create? I was in an environmental information class this fall and best guess of what solar can provide is 12%. That's with all the giant fans and farms. You need too much acreage to produce a lot of solar. AND when you get to the northern climes you don't get enough daylight. In addition, solar cells wear out. They become less and less efficient over time and creation of and disposal of them is highly polluting. Again. Wicked problem.

There are days when I wish I was stupid. Electric cars are the answer, and wind power and solar farms! They'll replace ALL THE FOSSIL FUELS WE NEED!!! They're completely clean and don't affect the environment. Everyone in the world will get on board and clean up their environments too!!! yep.. what a dream.

PEOPLE DON'T WANT ELECTRIC CARS PERIOD!!!
Car dealerships can't sell them either.
There aren't enough places to recharge the battery.
The cars don't drive in the snow either.
Ya know, everything they touch backfires on the people and we are the one's that try to make his blunders work.
I think the people just cannot take anymore of this. They're going to start going bullestic.
My apartment building was built in the 80's. It has been a place for retirement people over 55. Yesterday I heard from the cleaning lady that they turned these apartments into family apartments because they can't find a place to live. The waiting list are 3 or more Years everywhere around here.
It's ridiculous!

"Horror" wasn't the word I was thinking of. lol
Imagine you have to fly somewhere. When you get there you need to rent a car. Traveling is stressful enough, who in their right mind would rent an electric car? - +1 y
They really want to put illegals in those apartments. They have more rights than our own citizens, as those old people will have to move now.

@Liketotry the official statement was that electric cars were too expensive to fix.
- +1 y
I know battery replacement is costly. A replacement battery for my friend's Jeep was $1500 and that was for 1/2 of his battery complement. His car has TWO batteries. And he has a HYBRID.
Only upper middle class people can afford such vehicles. So, again, when gas cars are phased out, and before the infrastructure exists and costs go down and efficiency is rational for these cars in colder climes, they are NOT an alternative. Mass transport is. REPLANNING cities and towns so we are NOT car dependent. Putting government support BACK into public transport as it was 50 years ago.
Look at Paris and New York. They have mass transit that moves multi millions daily. Same with Tokyo. They have REGULAR train service between major cities. This should be done for the ENTIRE country. Pollution would plummet if people didn't NEED to use cars. Remember what happened during the pandemic. Air pollution plummeted because no one was driving.
6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Travel slows down in the winter (both in fewer people traveling and people driving slower because of road conditions) and there is substantially less empty space on cargo ships, trucks, and trains - this cuts down on consumption, reducing demand and thus prices. And if oil companies are manipulating prices to try to get anyone elected it's definitely republicans whose former president came from an oil family and launched a whole war in Iraq under false pretext to secure more oil and who they donate to by orders of magnitude more than democrats who are pushing for EVs and renewable energy in general. I don't believe you actually tried to "figure this out" as you'd have do be actually brain damaged to forget about Iraq and the fact that the right has been whinning about EVs and wind energy for years.

+1 yHere in the Southeast US, gas prices haven't changed much in the past month or so.
It is true that the Democrats are pushing electric cars and trying to get away from fossil fuels. They just introduced a plan to tax energy producers of methane gas.

@exitseven Don't worry, the Dems will find some way to tax flatulence.

+1 yCorrect, all administrations seem to do it and this one no exception, it's well understood. how people feel makes a difference, they know that... psychology works in impacting the button press. Isn't it amazing we've got major threat to transportation in middle east, strat petrol reserve depleted somewhat... and prices are low. LOL. Lets see the charts of relentless pushing down of those prices on wall street.
Enjoy the cheap oil while you can...

Yes, the Dems will be fooled again.

We had sky high gas prices for three years and all of a sudden the government is producing domestic oil and encouraging other countries to also produce more.
Biden flooded the market with our petroleum reserves to artificially lower gas prices for the election. Now that it is bone dry they are trying something else.
Right after the election the democrats will continue the fight against fossil fuel, unless they are stopped.
