The drawing of comparisons between Hitler and Trump are wildly absurd and off the mark, but swearing allegiance to a leader is VERY Hitlerian to say no more. It is totalitarianism in its' purest form.

To be fair, I am a Republican who is not a fan of the former President, so question my motives in answering this question if you will. However, history is pretty clear on this account. Hitler, Mussolini, Franco - all demanded an oath of loyalty not even to the state, but to themselves. History also shows, suffice to say, that such oaths have not ended well.

The USA is a creedal nation. That is, a nation founded on a set of principles. Those principles being articulated in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Federalist Papers, as well as some later documents like Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Those principles are timeless and while open to interpretation across history, they are NOT, emphatically NOT, to be subject to the whims of one man and his followers.

Thus, did George Washington deliberately limit himself to two terms as President. Indeed, he did so and said explicitly that he did so to avoid making the nation subject to the whims of one man. He deliberately wanted to avoid the "personality cult" that this question implies.

There is a fair case to be made for Mr. Trump - though again, I am no fan. The problem being that he is a populist. Populism is not a coherent philosophy, but rather an appeal to the envy and resentments that permeate the culture. In this it is ultimately destructive and indeed lends itself to questions like this one.

Swear your allegiance to the flag and the generational peoples of the United States of America; if that aligns with Trump and the priorities of his vision, then it would be a logical decision to put your support behind his campaign.

Too many insincere people immediately invoke godwin's law when talking about Trump, as though such a comparison is not the laugh-out-loud ridiculousness every rational person sees it as. The supporters of Trump's detractors burned down cities and businesses while wearing black and red, literally put the word "Fascist" in their own group's name, yet perpetually label Trump and his supporters as such as a straw man.

The reason so many people stick with Trump through thick and thin is because he stands behind their interests of national safety, national prosperity, national employment and saying-it-as-it-is; the very things the common populace resonates with, and the very things career politicians view with ire. The media has lampooned him for all the things his supporters want, which has made him a both a symbol of their cause and an underdog being victimised by an unfair system.

Let's put it this way. I have been voting for something like 45 years. I have voted almost entirely Republican, with a few votes for independents. I have never voted for a Democrat. But if Trump is the Republican candidate again, I might vote Democrat for the first time in my life.

Trump is a total fucking moron. He's an arrogant asshole, and always has been since he first got in the news 40 or so years ago. He was an asshole when he was a Democrat. He was an asshole when he was in a couple different third parties. And he is an asshole now that he is pretending to be a Republican. He's one the absolute worst presidents this country has eve had.

Trump is not a Republican, and I can't for the life of me figure out how the Republican Party could choose someone like him. The Republicans were starting to lose it by the late 90s. Now they are gone completely over the edge if they select Trump again.

Politics in the US is in a very bad place right now. Young people today don't even know the meaning of having a functional government with half-way decent politicians. No wonder they are so jaded.

The president gets it's powers from the Constitution, not the other way around. And any president who forgets that must be dealt with swiftly and absolutely.
