With all the moderates in the US how come they stay in the Republican or Democrat party instead of moving to some like the libertarian party?

One of the things that has kept America as united as it has been for the last 200 years dispute all contrary historic examples of similarly diverse and large countries is the requirement that half of us put aside enough of our differences agree on anything to win at the highest levels.

If you had a 3rd party you would end up with extremist regularly winning which would soo alienate the other side as to lead to constant revolutions.

Instead what we actually have is 2 relatively moderate big parties that only talk radical in their respective primaries where they do have many different factions.

Firstly, many people call themselves moderate or independent just to sound smart. In actuality, they’re just run of the mill Democratic-Republicans. Secondly, there’s a massive campaign to convince people that by voting third party, you’re wasting your vote. So in essence, many people don’t vote for third parties simply because they don’t want to be on the “losing team.” Finally, those who consider it are often bombarded with fearmongering to the effect of “if you don’t vote for X then Y will win!”

The libertarian party has moved further to the right than the republican party.

Anyway, moderates know the only way to stand against the relentless march of Christian nationalism is to vote Democrat. Even if they can't stand democrats, it is the only realistic chance of success.

Because the two party system, which I believe needs to be abolished, exists. I believe political parties should be made illegal, that individuals should be voted in on the issues alone and not because of political alignment.

If I had a Thanos glove, I'd snap my fingers and turn both sides, every last one to dust.
